DIY derailleur hanger?
 

Evening all

Has anyone every made their own derailleur hanger or modified one?

Got a Raleigh SP Team frame and can't get a derailleur hanger for love nor money. Can find some that are close though.

Wondered if anyone had ever made or modified one for an old frame? Possible with hand tools and pillar drill?

They seem to have Raleigh derailleur hangers pretty well covered.

If you have the skills and are creative, you can make one.

To do it properly, you will need the appropriate tap to make a thread for the bolt.

Alternatively, you could use a bolt and nut. You need to ensure it does not interfere with anything.

Understand, the bit that hangs down at the very bottom, is there to prevent the derailleur from rotating forward. You need to include that, or have another method to prevent the derailleur from rotating forward.

If it was me, I would use a larger piece of steel, so you have something to hold on to, or grip in a vice, and cut it off at the end.

Tried that site and numerous others but the correct one isn't on there unfortunately.

Was looking at 10mm aluminium sheet then sanded down to 5mm to creat that part which stops it moving forward. Its a two point fixing so doesn't need to be 100% perfect.

You want to use a malleable AL alloy as it needs the ability to be repeatedly bent not broken

Tap is M 10 x 1.

Malleability is not the design purpose of an aluminum derailleur hanger, since aluminum won't tolerate much bending without breaking.

The derailleur hanger is designed to be substantially weaker than the dropout and frame. A broken hanger is far preferable to a bent or broken frame.

Some 6061 aluminum sheet ought to suit just fine. It's fairly strong (as aluminum goes), very commonly available, and not terribly expensive.

A slightly bent hanger can be straightened. If the bend is substantial, it's time to replace it.

If you need to mill down a 10mm sheet, I have a small milling machine that can handle aluminum easily. I'd be happy to mill it down for you. I also have a full set of metric taps.

Weaker yes, and if it's bent too far you will feel the give when you use the alignment tool. T6061 has good workability so it's probably fine. However if you have the choice use 3003. In most cases, this is probably the best alloy for bending. You get average strength, very good cold workability and high elongation. It also offers one of the biggest differences between yield and tensile strength.

Terry is correct 6061 is fine.
Derailleur hangers (dropouts) generally are made from relatively soft aluminum. There are few ways of manufacturing them: Cast, stamp, forge or CNC machined aluminium. The highest quality and precision has CNC machined derailleur hangers. CNC machined sos hangers are made from higher quality aluminium mark 6061 T651.

The new DI2 DA has a skeleton drop out. Looks scary.

Any chance you have the original hanger? There are quite a few that are similar, but it would be difficult to know the exact bolt locations without a detailed diagram.

Found one with the best hole placement. Then some file work will be happening. Will post update once it arrives.

Mech hanger came through the post. Holes are spot on location wise. 5 mins with a file and it fits. Happy days.
