Weird rules for the group ride

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Popped in to check on BF, saw a thread about a shirtless, helmetless dude racing unaware strangers on a hybrid and crashing on a group ride... this forum does not disappoint.

And yet there are people on this thread who are a) taking his story at face value, and b) taking his side. This place is truly magical.

Great thread. You overdid it a bit at the end with all the "race-my-hybrid-trigger-the-cat-6" stuff, but the link to the shirtless crash photo is really good stuff.

Like if I was riding a road bike and ucanttouchthis was on the tail end of his recovery double imperial century ride, he might let me go cause he is tired, but if I passed him on the hybrid he would throw down like 3k watts and try to pass me, the race is on

UCantTouchThiZ would poop you out, not even knowing that he'd eaten you.

Have you seen his DIY, ziptied, copper tubing aero bars? The man is inventive and entertaining.

I recommend a football jersey. Heck, maybe even a football helmet too. Would not look out of place with the beard.

to be fair, wearing a helmet and kit wouldnt have saved me here, I need to watch experienced descenders take lines. My stomping ground was flat Ohio, these long California hills are cool but new to me.

Don't try and keep up with road bikes on a hybrid. Straight bars don't match up with drop bars and are a hazard and dangerous when they match up. It's no fun waking up with your head held up off the road by your helmet starring at a puddle of blood, been there. Nasty is seeing a bare head unconscious in a puddle of blood and I have seen more of these than I care to. There are groups around here that don't care about platforms pedal or your kit but any of the previous issues is enough to exclude you. Consider getting a road bike if you want to do group rides and they are about as much fun as you can have on a bike except for sex but I have never tried that. There are some old threads on paceline etiquette but the two big things to remember are ride in a straight line and don't cross the wheel of the bike in front of you. You will be judged on your skills as no one wants to ride with someone dangerous.

So what if you didn't have a jersey or helmet on, and so what if you passed them, got caught, and proceeded to crash...at least you had shorts on. It was very snobbish of them to not let you hang with them. I'd try again. Please keep us informed.

Lmao there is no way I’m going back there. I’ll just stick to the race ride.

Well said. 'round here we don't use the word 'kit'. "Accoutrement" is the preferred terminology.

I get a chuckle out of dudes "racing" when I'm not racing. Dial it up to 600 & kick my ass so bad I don't even know I'm getting kicked!

I don't do group rides, since most of them require helmets, regardless of who's organizing it. I certainly don't do "kits".

Reminds me of a story somewhere of a shirtless dude in jean shorts and timbs dropping people on a mtb

C'mon man, you know tenacity and persistence are a cyclist's best traits. Why let them get the satisfaction of never seeing you show up again? You should start with "hey guys, great ride last time" or something like that and do what you do. Please do this. It will pay off. Just let us know how it all unfolds.
