Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I live in West SJ (near Campbell, Cupertino, etc.). Sherpa is around here too though I've never met him. SteveE is not too far away either from what I understand.

TONY: Good places to ride . . . what kind of riding? For flats, well, the place is littered with 'em But I usually head for the hills . . . wind my way through the neighborhoods out to Stevens Canyon/Foothill Expressway and either head up to Los Altos/Mountain View/Palo Alto or beyond (Page Mill Rd, Alpine, Old La Honda, many other choices) or down towards Saratoga (Mt Eden, Pierce Road, Highway 9, Montebello).

I hate you Bay Area cyclists. You guys have the best rides in the country. I lived in San Jose for 22 years but had the make the move to So Cal. So Cal has a lot of nice climbing rides but nothing compares to riding through the Santa Cruz Mnts, Mt. Hamilton, Diablo, East foothills, or the best Marin County. I'm looking forward to my visit for the T-Mobile International in September...Lucky

The best bike ride in San Jose is Mount Hamilton. Metcalf is pretty nice, too.

I think StevenE is from Cupertino(Sunnyvale?), TerryMorse is in PA but heads down here for Stevens Canyon hills I believe.

I HATE hills, so typically will ride Foothill Expy, San Tomas Expy, and Central Expy. I also have a couple of neighborhood jaunts I hit when I want flat quick sub-10 mile rides.

Canada between Woodside and 92 is good for flat/rolling less traffic TT efforts.

I hate it when Central expressway turns into Alma st. The side of the street is way over due in being repaired. So I have to hog the entire lane to avoid it....

I'm in Cupertino. Mainly ride in the hills from Hwy 9 and north up to Hwy 92. Sometimes we ride from Saratoga Gap south to the Old Santa Cruz Hwy and down to Los Gatos. Less frequently up to the top of Hicks Rd. and turn around. Mt. Hamilton a few times a year.

(I guess this is a fitting thread for me to de-lurk in.) I live in southern Fremont, but grew up in Santa Clara, still work in SC, and go out half the time in Downtown SJ. Just went for a mellow little ride on Sunday on the Coyote Creek Trail...tacked on a Lake Anderson tangent to get in a few extra miles.

Props to all you brave souls commuting on San Tomas.

Depending on where you're going, Middlefield or Park might be better choices. They parallel Alma St. on either side, but both have better road surfaces and less traffic.

I actually have not ridden up that far. My "loop" from Homestead-San Tomas-Central-Shoreline is just about my goal of 20 miles. I can add a couple of miles near the house to take it up to 40K

You can cut through Palo Alto using residential streets. I do this during my commute from SC to Menlo Park. Alma is a bit faster, but I'll take a longer life expectancy over a faster jaunt through PA

Headed west on Central, if you turn right after the San Antonio underpass, you will see "Bike Route" signs. (I think there might be a sign saying "bike route to PA". Take that.)

Following the signs will eventually get you to the "Ellen Fletcher Bike Blvd" aka Bryant Ave. The signs are a bit tough to follow at first, but once you get to Bryant it is very bike friendly. Most of the roads dead end and only allow bike thru traffic.

A nice out-n-back ride is from the gap down to Santa Cruz and back up. It's really not that steep.

head down to morgan hill, there is a good 17 mile loop (longer if you want) with about 600 feet of elevation change. it goes out by a few reservoirs, really scenic, much nicer than san jose IMO. roads are relatively smooth. if you hit it around lunch time, you can link up with all the guys from specialized & fox to see if you can keep up.

While on the topic of bay area riding, distance and elevation, I should mention KLIMB:
https://www.klimb.org/klimb.html

Very cool tool for route planning and seeing how much you have klimbed.

I live in San Ramon, over at the base of Mt Diablo. I love it here for many reasons, but the cycling here is superb. Wide boulevards with generous bike lanes, fantastic scenery, friendly drivers, Challenging hill climbs, exhilarating decents, and pretty girls waving as you pass - what's not to like?

Saratoga Gap is at the top of a mountain ridge, so just getting there is a long climb from San Jose. Highway 35 along the ridge is gently rolling in both directions from Saratoga Gap. You can follow it all the way north to San Mateo or all the way south to Coralitos (near Santa Cruz).
