Aero Bars only
Anyone seen this? Pretty sure it exists - a bike where the bars are aero bars attached to the stem, and not just clipped onto drop bars or flat bars.

There is a vintage triangular shaped aluminum bar. I think made by a couple of manufacturers, but Profile Designs was a big one.

I never got the center section, and used the bar ends for shifters. https://www.bikeforums.net/attachmen...hmentid=566507 https://www.bikeforums.net/attachmen...hmentid=603020 |

Chris Boardman used something like that for his "superman" position one-hour record. Other than the stretched out aero bar-only position, I think his bike had little nubbins on the fork for sorta-steering to get on and off the track.
There appear to be some currently UCI legal all-in-one units that combine the stem, handlebar and aero bars into a contiguous carbon fiber unit. |
Any reason why these aren't more popular?

They may well be obsolete technology. Horizontal bar ends certainly don't seem to be preferred. Apparently the new thing is custom and semi-custom trough shaped bars. |

I'd say price, availability, and arguably less aero than the current crop of ultra-modern designs. |

If it works too well the UCI will ban it, as they recently did the SPEECO Breakaway handlebar after initially seeming to give that design their okay. OTOH, if SPEECO and other innovators can bring the price down, there may still be a market among KOM chasers. Heck, I'd try the SPEECO Breakaway bar if I could afford it. An old neck injury makes it painful to use conventional aero bars for more than a minute or two at a time. But I already use the hoods position with forearms as near-parallel with the ground as I can manage. The SPEECO bar would make that much more ergonomically friendly for gimps like me. But not at $1,000. When FSA makes one in lightweight aluminum for $250, I'll reconsider. |
