What happens when shift up at highest gear

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What happens when shift up at highest gear

HiNew to road cycling and getting my entry level road bike with Shimano Claris shift. Wondering what happens when I shift up at highest gear, ie push big lever on right side when already at the smallest cog?
related question, do I need to remember which gear I'm currently at?

Thx

The lever just won’t move. If it was built correctly, you won’t be able to shift the chain off the cassette at either end.

Assuming that the rear derailleur is setup correctly: (1) pushing the big (i.e., front) STI lever on the right when the chain is already on the physically smallest cog should shift the chain onto the next smallest cog, making it easier to pedal, and is thus a down shift, even though the chain moved up the cassette (from a smaller onto a bigger cog); and (2) pushing the small (i.e., rear) STI lever on the right (which is an up shift) when the chain is already on the smallest cog should do nothing.

However, if the high limit screw is not correctly set, #2 may result into the chain shifting to its right, falling off the smallest cog, and getting wedged between the cassette lock ring and the frame, scratching them both and potentially catching the chain, causing you to dismount the bike in an unconventional and painful manner.
