Ever forget your helmet?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

At least you remembered the twins.

no helmet

No…I’m currently on my 4th helmet. Cuz, for some reason (perhaps also cuz I ride a motorcycle & gone thru the motorcycle safety course) I always wear a helmet…or I wouldn’t be coherent & writing now (I’ve also had to replace my motorcycle helmet 3 times - idiots in those 4 wheeled vehicles seem blind to motorcycles and bicycles equally)

Once in a while I will get a block or so from the house and notice that I forgot my helmet. I have a bike I do my longer rides on county roads on and if I'm on it I'll go back and get it.

But on my old steel bike, I may not go back for my helmet if I forget it. In fact sometimes I deliberately leave the helmet at home when I ride my boomers and ride like it is 1980 again. No helmet, no gloves, no GPS, no LED lights and pretend I'm 18 again.

Everything right there and you can't use it. Sounds like something I would do.

Yeah, but if I’d left them in the garage I could’ve still gone on the ride…

Yeah, very frustrating. A bit like a dog trying to get to a piece of meat on the other side of a cage door!

Forgot shoes

We had drove 2 hours and a rider in our group forget his shoes. Luckily there was a bike shop close and bought new shoes and also had to buy new cleats. The ride included large hills and he had to walk up one for a few yards. We all asked if that is a mew way to break in new shoes. Quiet the expensive day for a bike ride bit a good one!

I did that once. I was half way into the ride when I realized it. I wondered why riding was so enjoyable. Ha Ha. Definitely not something you want to do.

This reminds me of the time I went skiing and forgot to pack my ski pants (brand new Goretex ones too). So I had to go into the resort shop and buy another new pair. Expensive lesson learnt. Except I did it again with goggles a few seasons later. Then I started using checklists!

About 15 years ago, I was getting ready for an early morning ride with a friend. It was very early and I was a teenager, so I was pretty sleepy. Leaving from my house, the ride went straight into a downhill. Halfway down the hill I had this realization, "I forgot my helmet!". So I stupidly slammed on the brakes to turn around, my friend didn't notice and crashed into me, and I went over the bars onto the road.

Broke my collarbone and got a lot of road rash, but luckily I didn't hit my head and no cars were coming. It was easily the worst bike crash I've been in though. That was the end of riding for that summer...

I've never forgotten my helmet on a ride since!!!
