The death of rim brakes, disc brakes now unanimous in the pro peloton...

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Thanks Big_John Looks like there are still some decent rim brake bikes out there. You guys can ignore my previous ranting. I'm going outside to yell at the clouds.

That's a UK site. I was ready to give some kudos to Canyon, but then checked their US website offerings. Ribble = UK. Decathlon = UK, Boardman = UK. Looks like it's Giant only that offers a higher level bike (maybe the only maker in this article to offer a rim brake CF bike in the US?) here in the US?

Preach it brother! Tried a compact and didn't care for it. I just use 110/74 cranks and update the rings.

Like you, it appears I'll never buy anything new off the floor going forward. That's life.

My friend back in Ireland is having trouble sourcing a rim brake Wilier Cento (Air? Possibly) from his LBS. I happened to mention it in my LBS in California, as they happen to be a Wilier dealer. They had 5 available to order in his size.

My friend is still considering it, but the 5 bikes might sit in the warehouse for months, or could all disappear over a weekend.

So manufacturers are still making rim brake bikes, but they are getting orders for significantly smaller numbers of rim brake frames.

Here’s what 30s of looking at the Cannondale website gets you;

Does the bike industry really want to force you on to disc brakes? | road.cc

This thread is getting so out of hand that even road.cc has weighed in.

Yeah, I was just referring the article's references, which wouldn't help too much a shopper in the US (though Ribble does ship).
I was most surprised at finding the Canyon UK vs US differential in online offerings. I think Canyon UK has about 7 models of Road bike offered in rim, while US has 1;

I wonder if it's been a faster convincing of US consumers on disc than in Europe?

Drop-bar gravel seems to taken root much more quickly in the US than elsewhere, so I wouldn't be surprised if this was a big factor; it is how I was convinced, FWIW.

I think it’s just a difference in rate of change of acceleration. My friends in Ireland/UK are all getting disc brake bikes, except that one guy who specifically wants the lightest he can buy. These are generally people who are just getting into cycling, and when they hear “discs are better at stopping” they don’t want to hear any more.

Dont forget, GCN are a European company, and they’re all-in on discs.

Here in Croatia, younger cyclists I know are buying discs, if they can afford it. Older cyclists are more reluctant. With less disposable income, on average, the cost factor is more significant to people. Several club mates got Giant Propels with 105 and hydraulic discs which is a great price vs performance proposition and a really good bike.

Gravel is probably helping adoption, too. A couple I know who bought gravel bikes sold their rim brake road bikes and bought disc brake road bikes.

I mean, really - if you want to make a point, make a point. Don't be lazy and drop some video with no other commentary. Who made the video? Why are we supposed to care about them and their opinion? What's the gist of their reasoning?

I think the point trying to be made was for a all around cyclist disc brakes are better. However if you want a niche bike as part of your collection rim brakes would be one of them.

Yep, or if you want to buy a discounted frame that isn't selling well.

Well, since we all know there are no rim-brake bikes on the market any more, the videos must be historical fiction.

I'm in my 50's I've been biking and racing since I was 9 years old. I can't for the life of me figure out why anyone cares about the rim brakes vs disk brakes thing.

because they are all "independent thinkers," and the media told them to.
