Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Why is it spinning both ways?

Hey, i'm changing my rear wheel and just trying to fit the new casette. I slotted the new casette onto the freehub and slot in the casette locking ring tool.... but then when I started using the wrench to tighten it up i realise the casette just spins when there should be resistence. So it spins both anti-clockwise and clockwise. Its a basic shimano WH-RS100 10 speed rear wheel, brand new though. Am I missing something here or is that faulty?

Wait. If you take the cassette off, the freehub body turns in both directions? It should ratchet in one direction (move easily but click-click sound) and NOT move in the other. If it turns both ways, you need to remove the freehub body and make sure the pawls are positioned properly to ratchet.

if you try to spin the freehub in a clockwise direction, the wheel should spin with it...
If the freehub spins clockwise without resistance from the wheel - not good...
new wheel - 'Return to Vendor/seller' - don;t mess with the freehub, get exchange/replacement/money back...
...unless you must mess with the freehub...

Yeh exactly! I'm like, am I being an idiot here, or is this brand new wheel faulty. Thanks for the sanity check.

Ok, vendor says it looks like sticky pawls and they'll cover cost to fix at a shop. Odd for a brand new wheel from shimano eh! Thought I was going mad there.

There may be a circular wire spring (rectangular cross section in a groove) missing or positioned wrong. It goes around the circumference of the free8hub body and applies tension to the paws. I’ve done this and the body spins both ways.

Sorry no pictures.

That wheels uses one of the Shimano free hubs that doesn't have separate pawls and springs that you can get to. They're inside the free hub that has a notched interface with the hub shell and is held on by a hollow bolt. Your local shop will most likely have to replace it, they can probably get it covered by warranty through Shimano.
