Trek Domane SL6 vs Checkpoint SL6

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Congrats and hope you really enjoy the bike, I know I do.
I'd be in shock myself if I don't enjoy it! The SL5 was in the back of my mind, but it wasn't until I spotted the presold one in the color layout that stole my heart.

its funny how things progress over time, when I tried the Domane back in ~2015\2016, I hated it. Just felt dead, that is why I shifted to the Emonda's and then when I tested the Emonda ALR, I was like, yep, we can stop looking. Fast forward a few years and I was looking at getting a SL 7 Emonda, and one of the guys at the shop asked me about the Domane, and I was like, yea pass, but he was no, no, no, they are better than they were before, here take my 2020 version SL 7 for a long ride, so 30 - 40 miles later, I ordered the 2021 SL 7, which migrated to the P1 due to the supply issues they had in 2020.

I have a 2021 Domane with 700 x 40s on it. Definitely would go that route.

I have a 2019 Domane SL5 and a 2021 Domane SLR7 with upgraded RSL51 wheels. It's more money. A lot more money. It's also a lot better.

1st choice: 2021 Domane SL 6 - Matte/Gloss Trek Black
2nd choice: 2022 Domane SL 5 - Satin Trek Black
Fingers crossed they don't both deliver the same day?

Im not obligated for the bicycles, even if they both arrive on time. I was informed by the LBS that I can rescind my money & walk away clean.

The tough part would come down to discipline. I could see myself N+2, but if I had to pick one, SL6.

There is absolutely no reason to buy both a 2021 SL6 and a 2022 SL5. They are the exact same bike except for the drivetrain being Ultegra versus 105. The frames are identical, and the differences between Ultegra and 105 are so minimal that you won't ever notice the difference while riding.

I like variety.

Well, except in my shirts. They are all blue or white.

I like variety, so I use the compressor for one tire & a pump for the other.

looks like i wasn't next "in-line" with the four months lead time for my selections... Might be eight months. Feeling I've been done dirty...

yikes, that sounds very familiar, which is how I ended up going P1. Something tells me they are short on tires, or a drive train component. Check it by going to the dealer and selecting the P1 and see what the hold up is. That is how I found out for my Domane SL7 I ordered was being held up by tires and cassette. It was going to delay it 6 months. Going P1, I selected whatever tires they had and went stock cassette versus the 11-28 I was wanting. My lead time went from 6 months to 3 days. This will give you an idea what they are short on.

I'd have liked it to be the case as you described, but from talking with the store I have my order placed with, they slipped some words by saying that I was not 1st in-line at the time I placed my order. I asked that person, why was I shown the monitor screen that there were two bicycles arriving in & only one was accounted for while the other one (that I claimed) was not.... After claiming that & placing a separate order for the another model bicycle, I was reassured that the unaccounted bicycle is mine as soon as it arrives.
I received an apology without reasoning.

The P1 route (according to the LBS) estimated November 2022 if I opt'd for that. I asked specifically, IF I ordered a P1 in my color but with whatever options, could I have it before any of the rest? There response was, "No." If you know of a way to get a P1 in under a month, I'm all ears.
If I had a penny for people's words failing me, I'd be rich.

well that is a drag. I'm going by my LBS today to pick up a small part I ordered, I will ask them what they are being told to see if this lines up. I know there have been a lot of changes and challenges since Sep 2020, but will let you know.

What size Domane are you looking for? I may have missed it. There were 56cm 2021 models in my area of Eastern Va. I think I got the last 58cm last July. Man does it ride sweet. I want a Check Point AL5 for touring now. I can order one and get it in Feb.

So I did not realize that my wife had made plans to drag me away for some Christmas shindig all day. Anyway, LBS owner told me that the delay is primarily components. Shimano back orders are massive and SRAM while not as bad, are still a problem. He said frames and such are in somewhat good shape, but getting the components off the boats are screwing things up.

thanks for the update. now i'm even more confused for not being able to order a P1 to have it sooner.

Is that P1 specific answer, where bike might be assembled with its parts here in the US? Or is this a reference to boats from Japan unloading in Taiwan? Isn't it Taiwan (or China) where the frames are made and sitting? I imagined anyway that basically a company like Trek was sourcing most of its needs (eg. all of the Bontrager bits) in a fairly localized area in the far east and doing the assembly there. Not sure where Shimano stuff is actually made these days -- probably depends on the model tier.
