If you don't use the support and it is public roads just go ride. It is not a big deal just avoid any common starting and finishing places. To pay $150 is a lot to ride a bike and a charity ride to me depends on what charity it is for? I can think of charity providers I do not care for and others who are at the central part of real charity. I seem to have different attitude about it than most post here but practically you are just out riding a bike. I have been and cross paths with organized rides with no intent to ride them, they happen to be in my riding territory.

uhh the high cost of organized road rides is definitely a financial barrier. All the local crits around here are 30$+ and most of the money seems to go to overhead costs. In contrast races in the city are free or 5$ which goes towards beer for everyone at the end.

Although I wouldn't. Call the organizers and see if there's some kind of "hardship" discount for people in your position. As far as not using any of their services... if you don't have a number on your jersey they probably won't let you eat their food or drink their water.

Larry's posting MO:
Hey guys, there is this thing I want to do that seems dickish and/or I've been told it's dickish. Is it dickish?
Everyone on the forums - yes it's dickish.
Larry proceeds to argue and justify and the thread goes off the rails.
Wonder how this thread will go?

Stick to the races you mention. Or ride for free on any given day.
Affording charity rides is not a barrier to the sport.

Gran Fondue, Century Riders, and other Poseurs are obnoxious.
Two or three times I have been out on my nearly daily training route and locals roads that my tax dollars pave and a group of these morons pass me and yell at me for poaching their ride, a ride on my roads. These group rides love my township roads. We locals hate them.
Larry, IIRC, you are quite poor. Do what you feel is right. I would not poach the ride but personally if I was entered, I would not care if a really poor person like you joined as long as you didn't take the lousy food and warm water.

For that $150 cost, Larry could buy two (2) cases of MD 20/20 plus a few bags of pork rinds. No shirt or other etiquette required.

What kind of liability insurance are you carrying?
There generally are liability wavers. And the ride may carry some kind of blanket insurance. But, an interloper wouldn't necessarily be covered.
So, if you cause a crash and damage a $10K bicycle, send a person to the hospital, and perhaps cause long term disability, then you could be liable.

It’s a charity ride, not a Larry Sellerz ride. You are not the charity.

You can still ride your own rides for free. Stop it, dude. You pollute this place. Or is that your intention?

There is, according to Adventure Cycling, nearly 18,000 miles of bike trails in 31 states and the District of Columbia, not to mention the many more miles of roads and other places to ride. Not sure why you have to have crap on a charity ride because you don't want to help charity. If I didn't have money to help out I just wouldn't go it is as simple as that...or I would reach out to the organizers and say "hey is there anything I can do to help you out before hand or afterwards to help this event run well. I don't have a lot of money but would like to ride and support in any way I can" They may say no just pay but like I stated earlier plenty of riding to be done elsewhere.
If you don't pay with money pay with hard work, loads of it or if you were a good person and worth fundraising for then you could try and raise more money then the entrance fee and offer to donate all of that money towards that charity and maybe still help out because it is what a good person would do.

There are many, many cyclists on this forum that ride as much or more than you and never spend a dime on organized events. Grow up.

Their insurance companies will go after you for their medical repairs.

I feel like there's a word for availing yourself to goods and/or services that you didn't pay for, but I just can't think of the term...

As for Larry’s question, I once ran into another rider. The collision caused my bike damage, but none immediately noticeable on the other. I told the guy to get it checked out, and if there was anything that needed attention I would pay the bill. In my sailboat racing days, I made contact with another boat and did the same thing. Virtually everybody I know would do the same if they caused damage to someone else’s property, whether a bike or something else.
