Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Crash repair

Howdy-ho,
I was on my 3rd ride on my new cannondale r700 machine when i rode over an open grate @ low speed. I crashed and my front wheel (shimano wh-550) is bent and unrepairable. My question is: do I purchase the same wheel and have it laced to the original hub shimano wh-550 hub or do I upgrade the entire wheel set? or do I just purchase any ol' front wheel that they have @ the local bike shop.

Thanks for your advice!

Adam

See if your LBS, or anyone else has a crash replacement program. I don't know, shimano might as well, but I kind of doubt it. Basically, this would let you get the same thing for a reduced price. It's worth asking about.

I have an older version of the shimano wheels, with the crazy spokes that hook into the rims. EVERYTHING on them is proprietary, so I imagine it would be very tough to rebuild them. I think that their newer wheels are not quite as silly, so someone might be able to rebuild one.

If you like the wheels, then try to replace it with the same thing. If not, well, this is a perfect excuse to get something else!
