Wheel Set Recommendations??
 

Hi all. Looking for some recommendations for a new build. Light steel framed road bike. I'll run 700 x 28s with Shimano 105. I'd like a wheel that are capable for some long distance rides (20-50 miles), but that can run somewhat fast when needed. Not pure touring wheels or race wheels. Something in between. Any recommendations in the sub-$1,500 range?

I have nearly the same thing, but the disk version, on my custom steel bike (see avatar). They have been going strong since 2014.

I was just thinking about getting some DT Swiss 1800 Splines. Now I have some options.

Need pictures of the bike to match the aesthetic. Lots of options for what you're looking for. IMO it comes down to style.

Well, a description is an early to mid-90's steel and shiny chrome "Geoid" Scapin frame. Forks are chromed Soma road. I'm going with a shiny chrome/silver look. The stem will be polished aluminum. Trying to locate a 105 group set in chrome. I think my seat/tape will be green.

WOW! I am definitely a fan of shiny metal over all the black stuff and those wheels are tres kool and decently priced. I build my own wheels and have a similar looking set with silver Record hubs and Sun 30mm rims

You've got the right brand; but rather than choosing their pre-built wheels, find a reputable wheelbuilder who uses DT Swiss components and have them spec a custom handbuilt set based on your weight, power, riding style, typical distances & surfaces, and what your existing bike is.

I've been using Joe Young for precisely that for the last dozen years or so, but there are lots of wheelbuilders who can knock this out of the park.

are you sure 28's will fit ?

Is this related to your light weight early 90s frame? Many vintage frames have limited wheel and tire clearance because of the narrower wheels and skinnier tires prevalent in bygone eras, so before we give any recommendations, let us know what wheels and tires are currently on / known to fit that frame. Otherwise, you may experience some rubbing or even jamming.

I have a pair of FFWD F4R FCC and like them a lot, but they are discontinued. This is its newer and wider successor intended for 700 x 28C tires.

Those wheels cost 2x as much as my bike. Yikes!

He said his range was up to $1500. Those are $1100. (They also have more expensive options.)

Their hubs are expensive (and arguably the best in the business). HED Belguim+ rims are arguably the best aluminum rims. They are hand built, so they stay true and round.

sapim race spokes
sapim poly ax brass nipples
mavic open pro rims

Lightweight Bicycle carbon wheels. For less than $1500 you can get good hubs (DT240/CK) and spokes. They are great for the $$. I got 35/55 (or close) to be aero but good in cross winds.

If you can find a set, the Dura-Ace C40s are a great durable wheel.
