corkscrew leg
 
i dont know how else to describe it... while pedaling, my left leg is always moving around in sort of a circular, corkscrew motion. it is slight, but man is it annoying, and i'm even starting to develop some knee pain on the outer side of my patella, which i think must be related. this happens while pedaling at all different intensities, but is more exagerated when i am really working hard. when i'm out of the saddle it seems to go away. also, my left foot seems to be rotating as well, inside the pedal. btw, i'm using mtb pedals and shoes (on my cross bike). i've tried changing the tension on my pedal, moving/adjusting my cleat, and nothing seems to work.

my right leg is rock solid. its like my left leg has a mind of its own...anyone have any ideas, thoughts?

am i just a freak?

yah... what Thyelsine said... it sounds like a discreptency in leg length (I have it too - u get up and u won't notice it, on the saddle on a fixed spot it becomes obvious) and I basically just unclip the left leg, bend the knee as hard as i can and it pops a few ligments (feel them move) and pop.. then the pain goes away for the day until the next ride (or if I'm lucky a few days).

hmm, interesting. maybe i am a freak! so do you get pain in your knee as well, and if so, where?

and can u use cleat wedges with mtb cleats?

Cleat wedges, spacers whatever you call 'em. You may need the shoe tipped in or out. My left knee follows a figure-8 pattern when I pedal unless I have a 1mm spacer under the outside of the cleat.

I went to a coach who watched my pedalling on a wind trainer then selected spacers and reevaluated then changed spacers and so on. The process took 30 minutes but it was totally worth it.

I don't know what happens with MTB cleats... maybe a metal washer under one of the bolts?

You can get cleat wedges as well as orthotic insoles, so I'm positive there's a solution out there for you.

My left leg, although it pedals much more fluidly than my right, (very annoying) slightly pronates (knee wants to go outward) so I've been bad and self corrected that with an orthotic insole.

I should really go and have my position re-looked at, but haven't had the opportunity recently. Plus, my next problem is my seat and a knee that's just not quite right after crashing my singlespeed and landing square on my kneecap.

Anyway, find a bike fit physiologist and go book in for an hour or so. It's an eye opening experience.
