Immersive waxing / it should be more popular

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Nah, it's a great place to live.

No friction between neighbours, great longevity among inhabitants, people are clean, work is done efficiently, just splendid.

Ironically, the X-Files episode "Arcadia" is on as I read this.

I think it is time to go door-to-door and witness to as many people as possible.

Not the first time I hear this but you can go back through my history and see that you are wrong.

Anyway, I thought seeing the used wax puck from Polaris OBark , who lives in fire, the other day here was cool so I took mine out to check it and clean it up a bit.

14 months, several chains, frequent riding, and in that entire period I never pre-cleaned a chain beyond wiping it with a microfibre cloth if it was especially dusty. So no boiling water rinses or solvent cleans.

It's MSW so the black juice that runs off would be a combination of the black friction modifiers and likely some other contamination. The only thing I've done to the wax itself is to clean out metal shavings with a strong magnet, I'd say 3 times in that entire period.

I took a sharp fork and shaved off the outside of the puck to re-use the inside, which is now the lighter coloured wax base. It is probably lacking a lot of the friction modifiers now, but I will use it for a while before adding an additional MSW puck that should then reintroduce some additives. I don't think it would make much difference but I never tried wax without modifiers, so giving it a go.

Good point. The only demonstrably effective way to reach the non-believers is by starting many more threads such as this on the various bike forums.

Thanks for your continued participation in our evangelical efforts, and may your drivetrain be grease and friction-free!

Yeah, but otherwise he's a great guy, and a major asset to RBR. (He tried it out here, but they didn't take to him, sadly.)

Who are you?
Given that they have about 12 people who are still active, it shouldn't be that hard to figure out.

You guys have the whole Jehovah's Witness thing backwards.

Among the medical profession, they are known to categorically refuse blood transfusions that would save their lives.

Similarly, among the wax professionals, oilgrouches are known to refuse wax transfusions that would save their drivetrains.

If that made any sense, it might be funny. But it doesn't, so it isn't.

I'll have to admit it was funny. A warped analogy, but funny.

Got caught in 10 minutes of heavy rain before getting home.

Plugged in crockpot upon arrival.

Ate dinner etc.

2 hours later wax is melted. Check chain; 1% so scrap. Get links count right and drop new chain in wax. Unplug pot. 8 minutes.

1 hour later agitate and remove chain to cool.

Walk dog.

Install new chain and test ride. 10 minutes.

No oily mess.

Works for me.

You didn't clean the new chain to remove the factory lube?

I wonder what percentage of people with failed Ultegra or Dura Ace drivetrains use wax vs wet lubes?
