i found an online deal on 2 year old model road bike (NOS) from a dealer with Di2 Ultegra.

The 2nd option is same bike, 2022 model from LBS with the thru the stem, no-wire look (which is very nice) but a step down to Tiagra group.

Trade offs beside the drivetrain differences are:
Better delivery time on older model, 1 week against a month or more for new in my color.
2020 color is not my choice but livable.

Is 2020 model Ultegra Di2 so good you sacrifice visual bike asthetics over a cleaner appearance with 10 speed Tiagra?

I'd take two-year old Ultegra Di2 over Tiagra every day of the week, regardless of price difference.

Solid performance over a frame with a couple of aesthetic improvements (but lower drivetrain group) is the right decision.

I do not follow the latest groupsets, but have not heard of deficiencies with Ultegra Di2 11speed.
Safe bet that Ultegra lasts longer than Tiagra.
But 10 cogs really is plenty.
Old legs should not over-torque either.

Never really considered Di2 until it's available on a bike I want at a value. (if all checks out). The online site is USA based and has customer phone lines. Want to confirm NOS and 'fully warrantied as new' before purchase. Not disclosed as a refurbed unit, show bike or demo or customer/LBS return.

Between my 11 speed Shimano 105 5800 and my Di2 Ultegra R8050, I actually give the smoother shifting to the 105. It also seem more responsive shifting to me and chainring shifts to the small ring and having to shift the back 2 or 3 smaller cogs (less teeth) seemed to not mess my cadence up as much, if any.

Haven't quite gotten the Di2 to work quite that well for me despite having changed various settings in eTube project. I've have got that somewhat taken care of so it's not the big issue I had when it was new. But I still don't feel it handles that type shift combo as well as my 105.

BUT.... I do very much like the fact that it has otherwise been absolutely no maintenance otherwise in the 2½ years I've had it. So If given the opportunity, I'd definitely get the bike with the Di2. I use mine in full synchro shift mode and it even seems like my chain is lasting longer. Possibly because full synchro prevents me from ever being in the big/big combos.

So I bought a 2 year old Orbea Gain road bike - carbon frame, Ultegra Di2 from Jenson USA
I passed on buying the 2022 model Gain.

For the same amount of money ($3700) the 2022 model would have been aluminum frame and Tiagra groupset.
The 2022 model with carbon frame, and Ultegra Di2 (12 speed) goes for $7000
The 2020 is lacking the display unit for ride metrics and is not as nice a color.

I hear you. I've got the R8050 group and had the same reaction when using synchro and semi-synchro modes. For me, the solution was to use it in full manual mode, with the RD shifter set to keep shifting as long as I am pressing the paddle. (Or it can be set to shift 2 or 3 or however many gears on a long press.) When I am changing chainrings, I press the rear shifter first and hold it, then shift the front, then let up on the rear. It's still not quite as quick as a mechanical system, but it gets pretty close.

Color and aesthetics play high in my bike choices. So I hope that doesn't discourage you from taking it out in public! <grin>

Not certain what the display unit is you are talking about. But as far as Di2 r8050, you will need to get the optional D-fly unit to let it integrate with any cyclometer you might have that can display Di2 info. I use the EW-WU111 and connected it first in line with the Di2 battery in my seat tube since it's a carbon bike.

Many of the recent GPS Cyclometers can show various things about your Di2 and it's status such as what gears you are in via several different methods, ratio, gear numbers or graphically. Battery status and a few other things it gives you. There are even buttons you won't see under the top of the hoods that you can set up to do a couple basic commands for your GPS cyclometer or have them do a shifting function. But for all the 11 speed and less Di2's you need that D-fly unit. IIRC.

discouragement on internet forums should be seen as caution. I'm OK with the color scheme.

Display unit is on motor & battery status, not Di2. Di2 interface to data, raises a whole range of questions for the 'clear your handlebars man'.

Man, 5800 sucked donkey on my bike. Anything, di2 or etap has been better on my other bikes. Like, I put 5800 up there as horrible. Chews shift cables. Vague mech feel.

FYI for mech and di2 lots of folks with the newer “r” r7000 or r8000 or di2 equivalents don't setup the RD right with that newer different screw mount setup where it bolts to and then has the little bracket. And it should likely change based on which cassette is ran.

That is a remarkably good deal. I got my wife a discounted Cannondale e-road bike with 105 mechanical and aluminium frame, on sale at REI, for slightly more than that.

If I even came close to fitting Extra Large (which I don't), I would be all over that.
