Chilly ride. There were some icy sections from frozen runoff. We were extra careful but a friend went down at about 3MPH on a full-width ice patch…he seemed to be ok and we resumed, but his RD shifting was wonky on the easier gears and we thought he may have bent the RD hanger inward from the crash. A few miles later he shifted and the whole RD came off. He had to make the call of shame. He rides Di2 and the wire broke so the black wire coming out of the RD has 1 cm of shiny copper wire showing. He was upset that he may need a new RD. I suggested this may be a common enough occurrence that it could be reconnected and all he needs is a new RD hanger. But I don’t know squat about Di2, so unknown if it’s an easy fix (or not). Anyone know?
I don't "know" about the fix, but if the situation is that it's fixable or dead, there's at least no risk in trying. It should be possible to inspect the wire and see if the actual wire is damaged, or just the insulation stripped. I'd wager it's possible to either splice a new one in, re-insulate the wire in a durable way, or open the derailleur body and add a new wire from an eBay dead one.
I also wouldn't tell your friend this, but if he's upset at replacing a Di2 RD, either Di2 isn't really for him or should take out a cheaper bike in crappy conditions.

In happier news, Atomic Mom got me a 14 Pro Max for Christmas which arrived last night, direct from HK I think. Is beautiful, but not touching it much until the case arrives later this afternoon.

If your friend just broke the wire, the wire can be replaced. But, that would not explain the RD falling off. The wire only carries electricity, it is not structural. It plugs into the RD and is not hard wired. I’ll bet a new hanger and wire is all he needs.

61° and drizzle here. I put on my waterproof hiking shoes, wool socks, shorts and t-shirt, went down to the church for a latte and all the church goers were shocked, many asked me if I was freezing.

Chilly day here as well. Only about 50F. Had base layer, bibs, long sleeve jersey, jacket, gloves, ear muffs, and still never warmed up much. 😜

Dropped the ritchey off at the LBS with the group. A buddy of mine that works there brought me a rear wheel to use until I get my new wheel set.
They didn’t have a front derailer clamp that would fit my bike, but they did seem to think that they could use the old clamp. I’m trying to stay optimistic.
Wish I had the funds to replace the bars as well, since the tape has to come off. Oh well.

Mine runs fine. The biggest issue is the battery life, which keeps getting shorter and shorter.
