Rock N Roll Gold Chain Lube

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ever tried waxing? People are saying it is way cleaner. And should be more popular.

Maybe this is the way to go. Or not.

Ha ha! Sarcasm aside, I switched from conventionnal lube (muc-off) to a waxed based lube (Squirt) last month and my chain is indeed staying cleaner for a much longer period of time!

Not motivated enough to start hot wax dipping, but a ready-to-put-on-chain wax-based lube, why not!

cough, cough, bs, cough,bs, cough cough.

The difference in resistance from the best to the worst lube is very small, likely 1-2 watts. The highest claim I’ve seen is 6 watts. I find it rather suspect that anyone can reliably feel that difference pedaling.

I’d bet dollars to donuts no one could pick out chain lube brands in a double blind study from pedaling, effort.

no no - I don't feel a difference when pedaling

I notice a difference when I push / rotate a pedal / crank backwards with my hands when off the bike (when placing the bike into our car / suv)

it's fairly noticeable

for reference - on one bike the prev chain lube was Muc Off ; the other bike the prev chain lube was NFS

Almost as many as there are motor oil threads on car forums. People are just fascinated with slippery things.

Question for those who've used both: riding conditions held the same, which do you get more miles out of before having to reapply: chain wax or chain lube? I've considered going to wax, especially since I like to take off my chain and throw it into the ultrasonic cleaner every once in a while, but I read wax doesn't last that long.

You read correct. Lube (provided it's oil based "wet" lube) lasts longer than wax or any of the "dry" lubes.

I’m still not buying. The objectively measurable difference is very small. The subjective experience of the observer is easily influenced by which lube you think is faster.

It’s my go to and I’ve been pleased with it. Honestly can’t tell much difference between it and Finish Line Dry. I reapply about every 150 some odd miles. Ideally I apply it the day before a ride, but it doesn’t always work out that way.

Edited to add, the last time I bought it, it could be found easily online for approximately $20 shipped for 16 ounce bottle. Also includes a small 4 or 5 ounce empty applicator bottle in the package

🎶 it's only rock 'n' roll but I like it 🎶

When I started using it about 3 years ago they had 3 variations. Absolute dry (red), gold, & blue (mtb bike or wet conditions). I’ve tried all three but now I stick with gold

Do you think they'd really name the product "Holy Cow" if there was only a very small difference?
