Best Bike STAND (for the money)

(...I tried searching for this, but didn't find anything. Sorry if i missed a thread on it.)

I'm tired of trying to lift up my bike, or getting someone else to awkwardly assist, as i try to lube it or get the squeeks out of it. I'm looking for the 'best bang for the buck' stand and was hoping some guys here could help.

I've heard of the ol' "2 chains and 2 hooks" that hangs from the garage ceiling, but i'll be moving between the college dorms and home some and i was wondering if i could get some comments on how well this works, so i can get an idea of if it's right for me. For the rest of you with 'professional' stands, which one is the best out of the lower-mid priced models?

Performance Quickstand. Got mine for $15 or $20 at the shop.
Great tool. Portable. Adjustable. holds a wheel-less bike upright.

I just use one of these. Works fine.

An even simpler version of the Performance Quickstand can be had from Nashbar for about $10. I'd include a link to it, but their site isn't working properly. Search under NA-SBM. It's small, sturdy, and supports the bike either with the rear wheel on or not.

Is the quickstand (or something like it) the way to go for cheaper bike stands? I suppose i'm willing to pay around $40 (maybe more, but i'd like to keep it cheap). I really like the quickstand becuase of the price, but will it allow me to work on my bike with relative ease?
I've noticed that many stands cost $200+, but i'm not willing (right now) to pay that much.

I appreciate your help. The more comments/suggestions, the better.

A better alternative to the Performance Quickstand is the Topeak Flash Stand. It is small, mobile, and will facilitate minor bike maintenance. I've had mine a while, and I like it.

The quickstand facilitates bike maintenence. I can put my bike on it, turn the pedals and adjust the gears, if that's what you mean. I can also use it to hold the bike up if the rear wheel is off and I want to clean the frame or take the chain off.

I can use it to prop my bike up if I remove both wheels.

The height is adjustable. I can make it so the back wheel is touching the ground or four inches off the ground or any place in between.

I bought a Park Tools PCS-9 on eBay for $79 shipped. There is one there now by the same seller, same price (item #7172266495). It's a very high quality stand w/folding legs, adjustable height, 360-degree rotating clamp, etc. Info about this stand on the Park Tool website can be found here.

I just upgraded from that stand. It worked well for me but I now have that stand sitting in my garage. koreansteve: any chance you're going to be in Cincinnati any time soon? I'll give my old one to you for $30.

soda, i live in Lexington KY, little over an hour from Cinci. I'm very interested in your offer, but i might look for another day...i'll get back to you tomorrow.

Thanks.

I don't really see why you need a stand. I've assembled bikes from scratch with only a nashbar quickstand, and that only for final gear shift tuning...

I saw that you were in Lexington so that's the only reason I mentioned it. I thought that there might be a rare chance that you're gonna be up this way sometime.

Thanks for this thread people!!

I'd say, when in doubt, go with Park.

However, a couple of those little stands look like what I need, you see, there are times I want to stand up a bike, with trailer, trailer laden with stuff, and won't have a tree etc to lean the bike against, that's when I could pull one of those little stands out of the trailer, stick it on the bike, and we're standin'!

I still have in mind inventing something of my own that will be more elegant, but one of those smaller stands will work.

I have a Flash Stand also - it's great. Worth the $$.

Olebiker 07-31-05 06:10 PM

I have this one from Performance: http://www.performancebike.com/shop/....cfm?SKU=18819
I like it pretty well. It is the best I have found for the money.

chroot 07-31-05 06:13 PM

I'm considering getting the Flash Stand and carrying it with me on rides like AIDS/LifeCycle, so I can hold the bike up at rest stops and such. Otherwise, people will lay their bikes all over against and on top of yours, and it ticks me off.

I am considering buying a Flash Stand and have a question. Is there anyway you can lock it to your bike when left unattended? I'm building a commuter with carbon fibre tubing which means I can't use an attached bike stand. I thought the Flash Stand would be a good alternative.
Steve.

koreansteve 07-31-05 09:37 PM

I'm thinking about going with the flashstand...from what i've heard and other reviews. However, from the pics of it, i can't figure out how it hold up the bike (with only 2 legs on the ground). Does anyone have a pic of it holding up a bike?

Stupid question, but i'd appreciate a photo. Thanks.

No. The Topeak Flash Stand just holds your bike up.

The two legs of the Topeak Flash Stand support the bottom bracket of your bike and lift it off the ground. The front wheel rests on the ground while the back wheel is up in the air, so that you can make derailleur adjustments. It is a very simple setup.

Thanks for the response, I will have to just hope no one steals it.
Steve.
