Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New to road bikes

Hello everyone. Ive been a mountainbiker for some time. But im now wanting to get into road biking, i have a few questions regarding the two bikes ive been looking at. First of all Im kinda on a small budget, so the first bike is the Giant ocr1,a little heavy im aware of,but not bad components. That bike is around 1000 at my lbs.the second bike Im looking at is the Cannondale r700, This bike is around 1200 with out pedals.Would I be better off buying the Giant and have a couple more hundred to spend on accesories, or go ahead and get the Cannondale and maybe waiting a few extra weeks to buy pedals and shoes.....
The kinda riding I plan on doing is longer rides like 50 to 100 mile rides.Any help would be great....

Get on both of them and test ride. Whatever feels good to you. There's nothing wrong with either bike. If you're doing distance riding, it's essential to get the one that feels best to you and have it properly fitted.

I know people doing 100 miles on the $600 Giant OCR3. You should focus first on fit, especially if you are on a limited budget. Weight is not that important if you are not racing.

if you feel comfortable on the r700 i would get that, from what i am told the cannondale frame is a better frame, it has been around a long time. and if you need to upgrade you can still hold onto the frame. that is why i made the choice. the r700 is a sweet bike, cant wait till i get mine, this week

I was in the same boat and narrowed it down to those two exact bikes. The Cannondale just felt better to me, but the Giant was a close second and is also a good value. As everyone here will tell you, ride both on the same day, and buy the one that feels the best. Either one is an excellent bike.

Forget those two bikes. You need an Orbea Orca (only about $5000-$6500, depending on how it is spec'd).

Just kidding. Cant comment on either of those two bikes, but I can tell you that a Trek 1000 isnt too shabby of a bike for a good price. If you are a 54cm, I will sell you mine with pedals.
