2022 Bar Tape Measuring Contest. (Mileage for the year)

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

They are the same length. They are different difficulties.
I was referring to the difficulty and how since that is a variable when outside, it makes indoor miles just as valid as any random outside miles.

Turning a wheel is turning a wheel whether it's uphill, downhill, with wind, against wind, or with a flywheel.
Unpopular view, I get it.

Kind of a disappointing year with only 2877 miles. Unfortunately an injury to my knee and then an unrelated minor surgery basically eliminated riding for last few months of the year, but I've still climbed more this year (177,000') than I ever have before.

Next year should be better

...and yet the amount of distance covered is indeed 20 miles for the first example, and 15 miles for the second example...period. The amount of distance ridden -- which is what a Yearend Mileage Pissing Contest is measuring -- is measured in units of distance only. The amount of elevation, or time, or power output, or work, etc. are all irrelevant when discussing distance.

Not unless your Zwift account was linked to an actual bicycle that moved over a distance of 20 miles. If your Zwift account is linked to an indoor stationary trainer, you did not ride 20 miles. Your trainer didn't move at all.

There's nothing about the question How Many Miles Did You Ride This Year? that relates to a "climb effort". That's only germane if the question is How Much Elevation Gain Did You Ride This Year? or How Much Work Did You Accomplish On The Bike This Year? But distance is distance...and distance only.

"Worthless"? When did anyone ask about "worth"?!?! The question is about distance. You could ride 10,000 completely "worthless" miles in a year and they would still be 10,000 miles of distance. Add What Is The Value In "Worth" Of All The Bike Riding You Did This Year? to the list of questions you seem to be wanting to have asked in these threads, and leave the How Many Miles Did You Ride? question to folks who use miles to refer to a unit of distance...which is anyone who understands what the word means.

Some people still cling to the outdated concept that miles ridden can only be outside.
Obviously if a bike on a trainer doesn't move, that bike didn't move. The wheel moved, the little guy on a screen moved, etc etc. It's miles.
Fewer now than in years past still fear this, but there clearly are still some.

There was definitely nothing anyone could have said to prepare me for it.
The wife supporting you will help, and it sounds like you do indeed know what's coming up already. We only had 1, so I have no idea how much "extra" the second (or third or fourth) would have been.

Its child number 2. Child number 1 is 4 years old. She is in school, so days that I am home, I’ll throw the bike in the mini van take her to school, ride while she’s in school and then bring her home.

I also have the torture device set up in the house, so worse case scenario I will be hopping on that whenever I can. Not ideal but better than nothing.

Lastly, switching planes at work in the coming months which will allow me to bring my breakaway with me.

391,000 ft climbed. Some of those are fake zwift feet, but not too many. Unlike last year when I did a lot of zwift climbing to get the tron bike

Wait, is the idea that you need to convert ridden distance to rolls of bar tape?

Did my last ride for the year. Total is 8420. Not exact, but estimate all but 300 are real miles. So certainly over 8K for the year. And 600k feet climbed.

Seems I will be at 11250 they are just outside. Being retired and not having too much family responsibilities allows the time. I think my Habby is getting close to 50,000 miles and same original shimano 6800 11 spd shifts great. I live in the flatlands so not climbing to be had or make comparisons.

Measured in terms of how exhausted I get, an indoor mile = 2 outdoor miles for me (and I have to ride hills a lot outside). Maybe I have the resistance set too high? Mentally, I also have a much harder time staying focused on the goal. There are no consequences to quitting the ride indoors.

So official mile count

10,045
153 of those were indoor
259,035 feet of climbing

2 crashes. crashes are probably not accurate but that is all I can remember.

Two virtual/online crashes. None IRL.

Let no good thread with a simple premise not go unchallenged or start a raging debate. It’s the Beekfaroom way.
