Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I was riding one Sunday and saw three riders approaching on the other side. At first, I thought they were on Pennyfarthings, then I realized they were racing unicycles.

I extremely regret signing up for the cat 3/4 road race now. I got my ass handed to me this morning. It was basically one continuous loop of me getting dropped. My matches were burnt before we even got to the dreaded hill on the first lap. I limped up it, the guy I was with sprang up it like a ******g gazelle.

We’re riding side by side at 23 mph wattage 365 and he’s is calmly talking to me, not even breathing hard. I’m sucking wind.

Sigh. I know there is always someone stronger, but damn I feel weak.

We had a chilly ride this morning. Anyone notice the KOM on the leaderboard?

You could take up walking. Less muscle required.

Racing is for crushing souls, as dearly departed PCAD would say. Sometimes you crush and sometimes you get crushed. To be competitive calls for a whole different approach to riding.

Man, I just realized I am 2 miles short of 250. Thanks!

First January I broke 1,000 miles.

I didn’t scope the guy out, I assumed we were about the same, nor did we talk pace. My fault. Once he started going I should have said I can’t handle it, but my ego got the best of me.

Yeah, in Portland the step up from CAT 4 to CAT 3 speeds was pretty YUGE.

There'd often be a 1/2/3 race and a 3/4 race. I reckon the 3/4 races were mainly so newer 3s could occasionally get a chance at a podium.

And CAT 4s that would rather come in 37/40 than be on course with those lowly CAT 5s

Story of my cycling life. There is a woman I have ridden with for years, or when climbing I am on the same ride as she is. She beat most of the men and all but 2 of the women in a climbing road race a couple years ago. When we used to ride in the mountains it was like she was on a motorcycle.

I mention her because she was there yesterday. On the first steep-ish climb she was out front, then the 4 guys were together, then me off the back. Sure, I've known guys who can out climb her, but these people didn't get there overnight. Most of the great climbers have spent years training, etc. Plus they likely picked good parents.
