I had a brake job done locally a short time ago. Two of the lugnuts proceeded to fall off at 50 mph, with my wife driving. She parked it and we went over the next day and retrieved it, by removing a lug nut from one of the back wheels and moving it to the front, and then later buying two new ones from Honda. Fast forward a few weeks and the same tire is flat, sitting in the garage. I put the donut on and had trouble threading on those two nuts, and ultimately stripped them, as I found out at the tire shop. Took it back to the same shop(I really couldn't go anywhere else) and asked for four new lug bolts and nuts. I got three new ones and a used one, and the used one won't accept the lug nut---what a surprise(tire shop again). And the new lug nuts are 7/8" while the rest are 3/4". I finally had a chat with the owner this morning. I asked him to please don't cut corners; I will happily pay more for a job done right. The locals don't want it done right; only cheaply. That's the basis he's working from, and I told him I understand that. I told him I really prefer to do business in the town I live in, and will happily pay more for the privilege of not having to drive to the city for service. I asked him if he could give me Merida quality service if I was willing to pay for it. Vamos a ver. I withheld payment for this ultimate debacle. I really hope it can work out.

Question.

Looking at a wheelset for the old 5200. Currently it has the old ultegra 9 speed groupset on it. I assumed if I bought a wheel with an 11 speed free hub body that I could just throw a spacer on it for it to work, or do I need to specifically get an 8/9/10 speed free hub body?

For 10 years, I've been wearing the same 5 pairs of Pearl Izumi cycling socks. Recently, I decided I wanted some better socks. At least, NEWER socks. So I took advantage of sales at LeCol, and got half a dozen pairs of better socks, including 2 pairs of wool socks for winter riding.

The last 10 years, I haven't lost a single sock, because I wash my own cycling stuff, the take it out of the washer and hang it up myself. Last week, I washed the stuff I was wearing on Sunday's wet ride, but Mrs. GeneJockey wanted to wash something so she took my stuff out of the washer, put it in a basket, and left it for me. Now I'm missing a sock.

The lesson - your nap can wait. Make sure you get ALL your stuff out of the washer, or be prepared to lose things.
Also, don't ask your wife where those things are. Trust me.

Not a cassette spacer but one of those little ring things works. I think it’s 0.6mm but my brain is fried. Ask around or ask Google. But it can work.

edit: Google says 1.8mm so that must be it.

My wife lost - flat out lost - my favorite Castelli winter jacket after we moved into our current house. I keep telling her she left it at her other husband’s house and she reminds me that after Spawn was born she has two children to take care of. She doesn’t have the time or energy to find a 3rd…

Separately, Spawn brought home daycare herpes on Thursday and had to stay home Friday. My wife got it Thursday/Friday and was able to run 19 miles today. I got it Friday and see no light at the end of a tunnel and have not been on the bike since Wednesday (read: über cranky). My tri is in 14 weeks and I’ve lost this week and last week due to life miscellany. This better be cleared out of my system by tomorrow morning. I’m already bailing on a ski morning tomorrow which never happens. I’ve skied in horrible weather and sub-zero temperatures so it takes a lot for me to miss a ski day, especially now that they’re not a weekly occurrence.

Mrs. GeneJockey taught for 2 years after we got married. The whole time, it felt like we were sick with one thing or another. The worst was a nasty GI bug that had each of us in the ER for fluids, about 4 days apart. "Down a quart" as I joked at the time.

So I have an increasingly annoying "click" coming from my crank/BB area. One or two clicks with each revolution of crankset. It used to only happen towards the end of a ride, but now it is happening even at the beginning. My friends are noticing and are not amused. I am well aware of the myriad possible causes and how tough it can be to isolate the cause.

I have already verified BB seems tight, as are crank fixing bolts and chainring bolts. I suspect it may be from one of the pedals. I cannot isolate it (of course) but the pedals are quite old and I have a new set I bought when I got the new groupset but was too lazy to break out when I did the build.

I went ahead and put the new pedals on this evening and fingers crossed that will solve the problem. If not, I may need to seek professional help.
