Addiction 2023.1

Notices
Road Cycling It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle. -- Ernest Hemingway

I suspect the cost of the trip ifor your family s about the same as a pretty decent bicycle. This is a great time in Simon's life to instill a life-long fear of giant rodents. Disney will find a way to bleed most of that $4500 out of you by the time your trip is done.

Florida or California?

We had a really good ride this morning. Everyone stayed together and the pace was hard enough for us but sustainable. Recall we have a splinter group of faster riders, they only had 4 riders today and did 35 miles at a SLOWER PACE than my group of 11 and we did 50 miles.

After the ride, I snapped a pic. Need a good caption, best I have so far is “Quin es ms macho?” Which was a funny SNL skit BITD.

Well I see some Addiction perspective might be helpful here.

The Addiction thread has always been unique, a cycling thread that was allowed to roam off topic and become a multi-topic, Foo type thread. For over a dozen years (I've lost track) it has been a success, not only because of the chemistry amongst the regulars, but largely because of the variety, or smorgasbord if you will, of the topic menu. There's a diverse mixture of guys that frequent the thread, and of course everyone's taste is different, but the chemistry holds it together.

The car topic has always popped up and bounced around briefly every now and then, just like any other topic. This time it stuck around a bit, a lot more than the average pop-up topic usually does. Two solid days on a single topic is a lot. Sure there was a random post about something else here or there during those two days, but basically it was 2 solid days of car chat.

Is that against any forum rules? Definitely not. But unlike a dedicated car thread in the Foo forum, the zealots can talk cars for days if they want, and whomever loses interest can move on to somewhere else. Not so in the Addiction thread, it's a multi-topic thread, not a sub forum, so it's a bit inconsiderate to expect to hammer on a single topic for days on end. I thought surely 2 days was plenty, but to go into a third day was just too much IMO.

Without lecturing I just want to remind about the chemistry element amongst the participants, when it's good the thread works, when it breaks down a little the thread suffers.

Again, I'm not here to enforce any rules about this because there are none. When I spoke up I did so as just a member of this thread, not as a mod.

Discuss.

i have very, very rarely (or never?) seen human feces on a sidewalk in san francisco, but i dont often walk around the tiny percentage of blocks that are really impacted by this problem. dog poop happens, more than id like (some percentage of dog owners are apparently total a-holes), but its almost always on sidewalks and i dont ride bikes on sidewalks 😂😂

my kids have stepped in dog poop a few times. very annoying.

i know that spot. mother in law/sister in law live on stoneshead, above the lake on the other side of westlake blvd.

where did you guys ride? ive never ridden much down there, it seems sketch to me compared to the bay area, where drivers and roads feel more cycling friendly. but maybe im mistaken?

Our club rides start in Northridge, about 25 miles from that spot. That area (Westlake, Thousand Oaks) is the best suburban type road riding I know of around here.

Northridge itself is a lot more sketchy. We have scouted routes to get in and out of there but some of it still gets scary sometimes. We also ride in the Santa Clarita valley. Drivers can be very aggressive but there are good bike paths to avoid the motorheads and when we get away from town it's very rural and quiet.

And we also have mountains with awesome roads all around Southern California.

I'm still enjoying Wordiply after day 5 but I think it needs more stats. Just that one percentile doesn't say much. I got over 100% the other day which was weird.

I got a 5 on Wordle, now I'm up to 4 more 5s than 3s

The Westlake area is lots of rolling hills and some very nice roads for cycling.

Infusion this a.m. A free benefit is that you get multiple BP checks.

Today my BP was in the 90s. Last time it was in the 120s. I'm not sure what accounts for the difference.
