Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

today's ride was one of those ones where nothing quite gelled. power was down right from that start (-10%?) and i made a number of stupid decisions - clockwise vs counterclockwise, resulting in headwinds in three out of four directions, i didn't stop at any point, also went for a ride last night, took a full dose of my hearts meds too recently, only ate one of my fruit bars, only had a half bottle of gatorade, and my hands were very cold. just under four hours is an hour too far for me for a "no stopping" ride. on the plus side, i ate ramen after, and my latest "bike accessory that literally only one person in the entire world wants" worked really well - a 3d printed "sp-connect phone mount to roval alpinist cockpit adapter." i believe it saved me .2 seconds over a four hour ride vs the bulkier and uglier quad-lock mount.

... also, someday they'll build a bike lane on this half of the bridge, eliminating these little ferry rides designed to make cyclists cold AF after a hard push.

Mellow Johnies wants the price of a used organ to rent a bike. Was almost thinking about buying something and leaving it there. Just a thought.

Mail finally got here! I had started to undo everything off Minivan #1, but whoever installed it went totally overboard with the electrical tape and the wires under the truck were all brittle and crusty, and the plug was already crappily spliced in, so I decided to just order a fresh one that's plug and play.

This frame on ScamBay actually should fit me quite well, and I am still watching it.

Issue is it is rim brake and that may not be supported well in the future.

yeah, bummer that REI doesn't rent in austin. better deals. try southwest cycles? i spent a few days there late last year and planned to ride but a) the weather was atrociously cold/wet and b) well, it's texas, and the driver behavior was not, shall we say, what i'm used to. how long are you going to be there for?

Looks dope, I really wouldn’t be concerned about the rim brake issue.

Once all the bikes are disc some pro will switch back to rim brakes. Next thing articles will be published about how great rim brakes are, and all the bike manufacturers will switch back to rim brakes. Anything to get someone to buy a bike they don’t need. Hook line and sinker.

With that being said. What part of the rim brake are you concerned with finding parts for? Calipers are relatively cheap. If you run shimano, which you do, buy 3 sets of spare calipers that should last you until you are in a wheel chair. Cables are not going any where. Brake pads are cheap too. Buy one extra set of shifters and you are GTG. Good to Go.

Those rates are silly. Mellow Johnies are about the same, I stay right next to Johnies, i’m not sure where that other bike shop is. Working a trip where I overnight in Austin 3 nights in a row. Johnies wants 80 dollars for 24 hours. Might seem fair but PHX and Buffalo much cheaper. I only want the bike for 3 hours each day. I would consider 60 for the 9 hours. I meant to call them today but forgot.

so the drivers were courteous and waved?

I actually am fine with rim brakes. But it looks like mid-end and high-end groupsets will not be supporting it in the future. For example, with Shimano the 105/Ultegra/Dura-Ace (not that I want Dura ace) only support hydraulic brakes. I am not “above” running Tiagra, but if I get a fancy nice new bike I may want to get a fancy groupset too.

I still think they will make a come back, but you could buy a new R8000 rim brake now with that fancy frame.
But I am picking up what you are putting down.

I have a fancy ultegra 6500 groupset I can sell you.

yeah those are the mellow johnies rates! REI is like $50 for first day plus $33 for additional. our local chains here are $200/week for an aluminum cannondale with 105.

let's just say it felt more likely to get coal rolled than 3' of space on a pass. but beyond that it's probably p+r so i'll say no more.
