Addiction 2023.1

Notices
Road Cycling ďIt is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.Ē -- Ernest Hemingway

I tried to get one friend to come by promising him a fun snow day. He finally came up and we set out to ride up Mount Abel. It got really windy and was sleeting on us. Just miserable conditions and we were wet and freezing in no time so we bailed. Oops.

Another time some friends and I tried to climb McGill trail and it was snowing. Not too cold or windy so up we went. Soon someone noticed the snow was sticking to us and you couldn't read the graphics on our jerseys. Our tracks in the snow were covered as soon as we made them. Thinking it wouldn't be a good idea to climb to 9000 feet we turned back.

Still snowing here outside Boston. Didnít get the big dump overnight that the weather people predicted, but thereís 3-4Ē down so far. Will wait for a little bit before firing up the blower. I have too long a driveway and walkway to do heavy and wet snow by hand.

Blossom is a Spelling Bee knockoff, but only making 12 words and going for points by length and bonus letters rather than trying to find every weird, obscure, and maybe-not-real word. I find that more fun. And it's free.

We only got about 3 inches over here. We have had a couple of 6 inch storms in January, which was definitely snowblower material, I’m surprised those storms missed you.

Safe update: My dad did get a locksmith to snowed-in property and for $300 he opened the safe.

An undisclosed amount of money was recovered, but no will. I told them to check at the bank to see if there's a safe deposit box. If not, it's not looking good.

The main advantage to finding the will in this case, as I understand it, is that we might avoid whatever is conveyed therein from going through probate administration (taxed).

Doing climbs in the snow are memorable, at the very least.

Several years ago, in June, my wife was on the AIDS/LifeCycle ride from San Francisco to LA. I roughly followed her daily course. I would go do some mountain climbs, then drive to meet my wife at that day's destination to take her dirty laundry and give her a clean kit.

One day, I tried to climb Mt. Palomar from Highway 76 to the observatory, but I only made it as far as East Grade Road. There was snow on the road, and it was sticking to my wheels. Soggy snowflakes were falling. A few cars came down the hill, but none were going up. One of the cars coming down stopped, but only so the occupants could point and laugh at me. I must have looked like Andy Hampsten in that famous Giro photo.

I probably could have kept going to the observatory, but the road past East Grade Rd was covered in snow, with no vehicle tracks. I cautiously rode back down to my car, got out of the wet kit, put on every warm piece of clothing item I had brought with me, and crawled into my sleeping bag. That was chilly.

It still bugs me that I didn't summit.

Our driveway is about 100 feet. This snow isn't wet and heavy, so I could do "high speed" passes. The step counter in my watch tells me that I pushed the snow blower about a quarter mile.
