Addiction 2023.1

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I tried to go digital in 2010 but preferred the diaries so I went back. The nice thing about digital is that you can include pics. Still, I find the diaries/journals more to my liking and I consult them frequently. I get asked by friends and family often to look up events, dates, etc.

About 25-30mi northwest (Acton/Concord/Maynard area). We never got the rain changeover here. A handful of flakes still flying now. Meteorologists were saying it should clear out entirely by about 4.

For about a decade (pre-Strava) I had spreadsheets where I recorded the general route I rode and ride stats.

I almost never look at them.

I used to keep a diary of rides, with distance, av. speed, brief description, etc. For a while I was plotting them out on MapMyRide to get climbing numbers. A year or so ago, I found that diary, and I was surprised, because I didn't remember having done that, until I read it again.

Now, I use Strava and every so often I import activities I've done since the previous import, and that's what I used to figure my annual and per bike mileage.

My diaries include way more than ride data. In fact, I generally only record bike, miles and destination. Strava handles the rest. These diaries are more for other stuff, both general happenings as well as personal stuff.

I keep journals for general stuff and personal happenings But they are wily nily. Some in hardbound books; some in looseleaf notebooks. I don't have an OCD bone in my body. And when I run up against it, I'm (is disgusted too strong a word?) by it. How about chagrined? Blown away, for sure. It is incomprehensible to me. I was just over in C&V and they were discussing a couple track bikes like they were art critics discussing fine art. I skedaddled quicksmart!

In stressful times I sometimes start journaling. They tend to be longwinded - surprise! - and rereading them later, an interesting mix of self-serving twaddle and real insight. These days I try to ride through most problems, which mostly seems to work pretty well.

Unless maybe I'm fooling myself.....

I'm currently reading the personal reflections of Marcus Aurelius and he has some great insights but there is some "self-serving twaddle" in his stuff, too.

You've got plenty of material documented when you're ready to start your memoirs.

Mine is paid off. Also most cars don't cost $1500/month. Even thinking about it in those terms gives the impression that you'll never pay it off, which is ridiculous for a new car. People really need to make better decisions about them.

Edit: Sorry, didn't mean to pile on this one after seeing the other quotes now. But, why do you like posting Tweets that are clearly going to get people fired up?
