Addiction 2023.1

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I like to listen to whole albums of the bands I like. If I want a song here or there I’ll just stream.

I don't either, and I won't either, and most of us other than BillyD will be happy.

the cassette has dug pretty deep gouges in the free hub body. I’m convinced if it’s not the bb it that. I think when I get home i’ll pull it off and put grease around the free hub body to see if that fixes it.

Just back from PHL to pick up Heidi who is home for spring break. She flew here from LAX via Spirit and was not impressed with the experience.

She enjoyed the ride in the Saturn, which has neither a cassette player nor a CD player. It does have a functional AM/FM radio, though.

I had a 1972 VW Beetle, BITD, that only had one working speaker. Made you notice how a band split up their stereo mix.

Are there decent radio stations in your area? Seems to me when I've been away from L.A. I can find stations I like. They don't last long here if they don't follow the formula. Playlists and the stupid morning talk shows where they try to be funny.

Thankfully here we have 2 public stations, one jazz and blues and the other is rock themed with new music, local bands, and some odd stuff, too.

I had old cars with a single speaker, A.M. only, and even tube type radios. And the ones with a vibrator that would hum whenever the radio was on.

We do have lots of options. The UPENN radio statio WXPN is eclectic and good. Mrs datlas prefers the public radio/npr station. On my way to/from work (10 minutes) I often just listen to the news station.

The round thing in the center of the dash is the speaker.

I had a 56 VW with the speaker in the center. Note, no gas gauge.

I like to use it on a long road trip, and the longest I ever go is five hours. And I do that once every few years (going to/from Cancun airport). But it's still nice to have it for those few times.

$10 million is like my department's budget... ok a bit more than that. Not sure what's being counted for that. SVB had a $175bn in customer deposits.

Mind, the banking industry is such a curve that number 1, JPM, has $3.3tn in assets. However, it's not about SVB specifically. In 2008 banks went down one by one, in what were called FDIC Fridays (hey, look at that!). We're in the Alps and just heard a low rumble. Will the avalanche come? Firm maybe.

I hope not.
