Addiction 2023.1

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Having a latte at the Los Gatos Starbucks. Not a cloud in the sky, winds are low, not much debris or water on the roads. Taking an easy endurance cruiser.

THIS is springtime.

I grew up in a logging town, so the smells were wonderful. High lead logging can be kind of noisy, what with the saws, the yarder engine and the whistles but it is easy to get used to.

Not the biggest fan of large animal feeding operations or paper mills. Corn has its own aroma when it goes on for miles, but its not bad. We have a farm near here where they grow a mix of clover and vetch for animal fodder, and it smells very nice. I just stay away from the dairy itself, and the beet processing plant near by smells like a mix of rancid beets and burnt sugar.

Fargo is about as big a city as I can stand for very long, although there are a few other larger cities that I would consider moving to.

Close enough, anyway.
I know that place! My wife went to grad school at MIT, I moved up for residency, and we lived in Cambridge, Watertown, and finally bought a house in Waltham. I logged thousands of miles on the roads up there and did the Weds night crits at Hanscom field and Thursday TTs in Concord with the NEBC. It was pretty nice back in the 80s and I was sad to leave.

today's not-riding-yet project, version 2.1 of my sp-connect integrated cockpit mount. last one was angled down just a bit too much, phone too close to the top of the bars. on the balance, i like the mounting action of quad-lock better, but the sp-connect hardware looks so much better, more minimal, no lever sticking out that says "PUSH."

That map reminds me of coffee. They should do a map of the average colour of the coffee each nation drinks.

I was also feeling a little down about the situation at work, because even though MY position is secure, and the company is in really good shape (2+ years of burn in the bank), our little outpost had been such a great place. People stayed there even though they could have gotten better paying jobs elsewhere because they liked working together. My group of 7 had 3 folks with 20 years seniority, another with 15, me with 13, and another with 10. The "new kid" had been there 7 years. And now, all scattered to the winds.

So, I almost bagged on riding at all, but a small part of my brain said, "Don't skip the ride because you're feeling down, because that'll make it worse. Ride, and that'll make it better." So I did, and it did, even though it was just riding in the virtual world.
I also thought about not going but I went. It was a big group (for post covid) and some fast people were there. I felt crappy but tried to hang on for a while. My friend who I thought was going to stay with me dropped out on the first climb. I guess he was feeling worse than I was. I hung on (read: they waited) but eventually dropped out and rode back alone. My level of suckage is high.

That poor Moots, relegated to MUP duty with those Serfas Drifters. I do admire the dedication to keeping the bike close at hand though
