Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

In the mid 60s I lived across the street from a small hospital and they had a snack/lunch counter. We never had soda drinks at home and the first time I had a fountain drink was at that lunch counter. A cherry Coke. I had never heard of such a thing. When my friend and I could scrape our pennies together we would get a cherry Coke.

The Woolworth store where I grew up had a lunch counter into the mid-late 90s. Used to go there with my mom and grandma while shopping.

I'll bet you thought you died and went to heaven when you had that first Cherry Coke.

I know I did.

I feel am old! My small home town had a neat catch-all shop with the then (late '50s/early '60s) common fountain counter. My mom worked there before she re-married, starting behind the counter then moving to sales generally (floor walker). Main floor sold china, books, magazines, general 'stuff.' Upstairs ... toys and puzzles and such. Almost everything in that shop was imported from the UK. Shop was in the centre of town, just down the street from the Eaton's dept. store -- two floors, would you believe it!

My mom would treat me and my sister to something at the fountain about once a week. We loved it. My grandmother (bless her snobbish heart) had much grander ideas as to what constituted a 'proper' outing -- tea at Eaton's -- for her grandson.

Growing up in a town of 600 people, the closest we had to a snack/lunch counter was Bill Raffensbergers, where he had candy, chips, a small freezer with popsicles and such, and a rack with some magazines. In fact, I bought my first car magazine there - an issue of Road & Track with a Jaguar E-type 2+2 on the cover. I was 8 years old, and that was the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen.

I don't remember. I do remember that at the other end of town, at Swayze's Philips 66 station they had one of those coke machines with the glass bottles, where you'd put in your nickel and pull the bottle you wanted.

Yes. Absolutely. Milk, seltzer/soda water, and chocolate syrup - preferably Fox's U-Bet.

With the bike in a workstand, spin the wheel and hold a couple fingers on the fork near the hub. It should be smooth, not granular feeling. Worn or crappy bearings feel "gritty" when they spin.

Oh, and it should spin forever, and when it stops, spin backwards and forwards in decreasing arcs till it finally settles with the heavy spot down.

My first bike as a grown up was a 1994 H400, which I later equipped with a drop bar and bar ends. I switched it back to a flat bar so The Older Boy could use it to commute, but he decided he'd rather walk.

I get that, I know what you mean. I find myself tending to live more in some of the enjoyable parts of the past now than in the future. Just today the wife and I were talking about revisiting one of our favorite vacation spots.

What I loved most about Nedicks was the toasted bun, and the relish, not so much the hot dog. We had an old candy store with a soda fountain right across the street where they would make the egg cream with an egg . . . I can picture him breaking the egg with one hand, still today . . . and using vanilla syrup, never chocolate. Good times.

This presupposes that your brake pads aren't touching the rotor.

Everything I have ever read about Egg Creams always starts with, "Despite the name, there's no egg in Egg Creams"

I never saw an egg cream with an actual egg, but that name must have come from somewhere.
