Addiction 2023.1

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

An aluminum frame on a touring bike? That's crazy!

We had a really good ride. It started out chilly with temps near freezing, but it was sunny and warmed up to the 40’s quickly and was about 50F by the end. The group was almost too big at 16 or 17, but luckily everyone behaved and a splendid time was had by all.

One of the guys on today’s ride is a serious cyclist, when I told him I was considering a new bike, custom geometry, and was considering Enve he made a face and said no. Calfee? No. Seven?? No. IF?? No.

I gave up. He said Argonaut. Will investigate. Anyone have direct experience??

I sorely hope that this trip I'm taking in June will be the last time I have to mix it up with the airline industry. I'm drawing a lot of lines at the 70 mark. It feels good.

None whatsoever, but they look really nice on their website.

Better act fast, they are financing through Affirm to get you on the road!

Funny thing, it had a steel fork. It rode really well with a load, better than the Nishiki it replaced. I rode it unloaded in the mountains sometimes. Very comfortable, just didn't want to be chasing club riders with it, though I did a couple times. I think it was about 24 pounds unloaded.

You remember the Heartbreak Hundred route? I lived in that area and did that loop solo on that Cannondale. Hardly anyone out and it rained a little in Lockwood Valley. A very memorable ride.

I did the Solvang Century on it with my ex wife. I remember that being a little more difficult than I thought it should be.

i am not sure what i think of it. it looks sort of sexy and futuristic from some angles, downright silly from others. that front joint below the bottom bracket looks really sketchy but i’m sure they’ve engineered and tested it to death. (hopefully not literally lol)

it’s funny that everyone assumed the patent on that frame concept was for a new roubaix, but it’s a sirrus!

My plan for my final years is to actively step further out of the fray, rather than back into it. I have already been out for a goodly period of time. Full disclosure---I was never in the fray; a loner since my very early days, and have been drifting away now, for 65 years or thereabouts. It suits me.

Steel fork -- just like my old Klein.
24 pounds -- same as the Klein.

That beast was my only ride for a few years. I did my 200-vertical-miles year on it, which included the Everest Challenge.

Yes, I remember the Heartbreak Hundred route. I only did it once, chasing but never catching the "Nail Eater" (a multi-day ultra-endurance racer from Tustin). He really knew how to suffer. A ride buddy took one look at him and said, "That guy looks like he eats nails for breakfast." And thus the nickname was born.

Dang, my Cannondale touring rig is sitting at 25 lbs. Prolly 24 without rear rack and decaleur bracket though.
