Addiction 2023.1

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

MOTD

It's not talked about nearly as much as some of the bigger states, but Mississippi is not looking great.

Hmmm....it's air, fuel, or spark.

They drive around here all the time. Still developing them. Dumbest thing ever. You have to be in the car. Why pay for technology to do something you have to be there for anyways?

I remember a couple weeks ago. The discussion was about fraud and banks. And people getting hacked etc. I am no longer master of that domain. In the words of Kosmo, "I'm Out!"

I just posted a parody thread in "General," so if you don't see me for awhile, you will know why.

I do hope that any potential transgressions will be laughed at and/or forgiven.

Yeah, but how many are moving someplace else in the US, vs how many are leaving to join the Choir Invisible?

Consistently one of, if not the, poorest, least educated, most obese and least healthiest states in the country.

nobody beat honda’s manual transmissions from that era. i had a couple, and every time i drove a bmw, porsche, ford, or a bunch of other cars which were superior in other ways, all i could think was “man this transmission sucks.” still have an ‘02 S2000 with very low miles, but sadly haven’t even moved it from the parking spot in a year or two.

they’re past that now here, both cruise and waymo have vehicles driving around with nobody in them. a few friends are in the pilot and they say it’s pretty spectacular - you request it like an uber and it rolls up and takes you somewhere, with no driver. there are definitely kinks to be worked out though, and the city has asked them to slow down the expansion.

ubiquitous use is probably farther in the future than the boosters say, but probably not that far. interestingly, i encountered one at a four way stop a few days ago while riding, and it absolutely correctly interpreted my “because i didn’t come to a complete stop i think i beat you here and am going to go” neighborhood behavior. i would have waved thanks to a human driver, but it didn’t seem necessary. it came to a complete stop and waited as i rolled through. creepy and impressive at the same time.

or almost anywhere rural, really. although the .01 to 2.49 percent negative beige ranges from “no big deal” to “ouch” from a demographic standpoint.
