Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shimano BR-RS305

Hi,

I bought bike with BR-RS305 mechanical brakes. I have not ridden it yet, so I am looking for opinions about them.

Anyone used them? Any comments? Any comparison to TRP Spyre?

I live in flat area and I am not sure if it worth to go for hydraulic set. Tiagra is not super expensive but I am not 100% sure, that hydraulic set is improvement I really need

I've had both types before, I am not a fan of mechanical disc, but they were not horrible and found them much better than the Spyres. I replaced the Spyres with the TRP Hy\Rd and those were a much better solution versus the Spyres. I would say, if you can spend a few extra to get the liquid, then I would do that, but also living in a flat area, I can understand the dilemma.

If you don't want to spend the cash, I would go with the Shimano's.

I do not have that model number. But I do Shimano BR-R577 mechanical disc brakes. Just by doing a search, and looking at prices, it looks like both models are pretty close in price and quality. I have had them for a number of years. They have been quite good, IMO, better than Avid BB7 that I also had for years. Watching a couple of videos helped get them set up properly, and in keeping them tuned. I have replaced the front rotor and pads, once, but not the rear, though I do have them is storage. I live in flatland, and don't ride in the wet a whole lot, ergo, the braking I do is not real stressful on the system, except for sudden/emergency braking.

In second bike I have Spyres. If Shimano are equal or even better, I will stay with them. Another thing that I can use high end Shimano rotors, which are quite good and very light.
