cycling is a catch 22. Ride &/or die. I'll enjoy the ride.

Your thread title is incorrect: there is nothing to suggest that this article was funded or performed by the NIH.

This sounds similar to what’s in the Haywire Heart book which is more recent and has a lot more detail… it’s mainly an issue for ultramarathoner types, not so much for regular riders like most of us.

I've got to ask. OP, are you going through a mid life crisis? Most of the threads you've started recently would suggest so. That's life. You have to deal with it.

He says it is an NIH study in the thread title.
It's actually not a study done by the NIH. The NIH simply lists it on pub med. They list most bio-medical publications from Europe and the rest of the world, too. There is also no acknowledgement of an NIH grant funding the study, which you would see at the end of the publication if it were funded by the NIH. (I've forgotten to do that, so it isn't definitive.)
It's not problematic. But the thread title is not accurate.

Since you asked, there haven’t been many new threads recently so I decided to add a couple. Even if they start boring, they usually morph into something more interesting. Appreciate your lack of concern.

I read those studies a while back. Okay sure, I could dial it down a bit, not bounce my heart of the rev limiter as often... and drink no alcohol, eat more quinoa... Or, and hear me out - Or, I recognize that I'm 55-yrs-old, have a resting heart rate of 52, no signs of plaque, BP is where it should be, very little body fat, I lift weights twice/wk, ride 3-4 times/wk... and am probably in the top 2% of fitness/health for dudes my age. I'm fine.
I seek not to maximize the years in my life, but the life in my years.

It's a real study that NIH published. This is a bike forum. Why does there always have to be a bunch of pedantic nonsense that obscures the topic?

As you point out, this is a discussion forum, and we are having a discussion. If the discussion isn't going according to how you would like it to, you are welcome to get all huffy and leave, just like real life.
I do agree it is a very minor point, but if it was an official NIH study, it would add credibility. The problem is that not all journals and their peer-review processes are equally robust, and NIH's pub med is providing an indexing service, not an endorsement or vetting. Also, what you claim is still wrong; the NIH did not publish this. They indexed it.
Also note that this would have been one small passing comment in a conversation had you not focused on it and derailed the conversation. Well done.

I put this out as a PSA. To use an old trope, if one person benefits from the article….blah, blah. Not everyone delves into research on their own. I feel its best to make an informed decision on the benefits vs risks. I read The Haywire Heart ages ago and keep up with the latest research on athletes and performance and health, so this is no late breaking news to me. I know I am going to keep at what keeps me happy, which puts me in the more risky category, but I’m no longer going to try to get KOMs on 20% climbs which has my heart red-lined for 5 mins at a time. — My cat has no opinion nor does she ride a bicycle <-scandalous! Have a good day.

The cat is obviously the best part of this thread.
