Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Distorted Vision with Prescription Sunglasses

I recently bought a pair of Rudy Project Rydon sunglasses and am having a problem with the RX inserts. My vision with the inserts is very distorted. It's similar to looking through a round fish bowl or a car's passenger side mirror (objects in mirror are closer than they appear) The optic shop that cut the lenses say it's due to the extreme curvature of the RX frames. They say the problem is common with wrap style sunglasses with RX lenses and I'll just have to get used to it. The curvature explanation sounds reasonable except that the left side is not as bad as the right, which leads me to believe that curvature can't be the total problem. Has anyone experienced this with prescription sunglasses? Is this something that I just have to accept or is the Tech at the optics shop just not doing something correctly? My prescription is -3.75 and RP says that the inserts are recommended for up to -4.0.

Thank you!

I had the same problem with my first pair of frames with inserts. It's a problem if you have an Rx for stigmatism and is caused from the inserts bending from contact the lens. You could try bending the frame so the inserts does not touch the lens or try another pair. I'm currently using a pair of Bolle Parole and don't have any problems.

I know what a pain it can be ro ride while seeing badly.

I have two pairs of Oakley prescription sun glasses both with pretty serious correction (+5.25 for the left and +3.50 for the right). One is the A-wire model and the other is Hachet-wire. The Hachet-wire model is more curved than the a-wire model. I see great with both models and never had problems. My optician clearly explained the models I should use in regards to my correction beforehand. I am surprised to see that you would have problems afterwards. I have a feeling that they did not make the lenses correctly.

Next time when you change prescription sunglasses and if you consider Oakley brands, I would suggest the metal A-wire models because they are really solid. The hachet-wire is better but just too expensive. The money is probably better spent on a bike part. cheers.

clausen hit it on the head....I have the same situation....that's why you need a model of glasses with less bend/curve to them. I too have Bolle' and they work great. If you go to something like this, think about what my guy at the eye doc did (he's a rider too)....changed the point where the eye looks out of the lens just a bit...forgot what they call that....so that it is a little higher in the lens...since you look up while in a riding position.
