Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

All that green will turn brown by the end of May, and just get drier and drier, so that by the time the hottest months of September and October arrive, a harsh look will start a fire, which will propagate across miles and miles because everything is so dry.

Once the rains start, usually in November, all the seeds start soaking it up and germinating, and then it's like a race to get through their life cycle before it dries out again. So, early April is usually the peak for plants here.

Here's the same place, taken May 22 of last year - basically a month from now - and it only got browner and browner for another 7 months.
And here we have the reverse. Rainy season June through November. No rain at all December through April, with small bits in May.

Alarm cat woke me up at 5 again but then let me go back to sleep at 7.

Still better than the phlebotomist waking me up at 5.

Scam alert

I got this coupon in the mail. They sent it to me. Clearly says $20 off. I'm at the checkout and I don't see how to actually get $20 off.

Mexico is a country with differently colored bank notes. And different sizes, so that if you're blind, you know what you're spending, and getting in change. We got a new issue recently and someone, in all their wisdom, decided that the 20 and the 100 should be the same exact color. True, they are different sizes but that only helps you if you're blind. It keeps us on our toes.

Are you spending $55, or $35? Maybe it's built in.

When I get to the payment page it shows $55, even if I click through the email link. I don't see a code in the email to use at checkout.

Protective coloration. Trying to lull us into a false sense of security before the big takeover.

Speaking of which, no need to wait long periods of time anymore for a bird to fly in the right direction, BillyD . Just tell your friendly text-to-image generator you want more bird pictures and presto!

my numbers were to the top of the climb, but you’re definitely closer to a wider variety of medium climbs. I do get a little tired of the two ways I go up Tam, each has a drawback, as nice as they are. The “clockwise” route has a descent that’s too windy to really get much speed, and then more climbing to get home. The “counterclockwise” route has a brutal stretch of rollers between 1,500 and 2,000 feet that i just hate, as scenic as they are. I did Diablo a few weekends ago and really appreciated how continuous it was.
My usual preference is to go up Old La Honda, then down 84, because it's so much wider, less technical, the road surface is much better, etc. Normally I skip the big climbs while the roads may still be wet, and around April/May I start going up again.

Not this year.

Hwy 84 is still closed at Portola. I was wondering when it would reopen, so I googled it and... I think it'll be a while

That 60 Minutes piece on AI last night I found really interesting, brought me back to a time in my career at the Nynex hi-tech lab in the late 80s. I was working on a voice response system while some of my colleagues were working on AI. These were brilliant folks, but it never seemed they were making much progress back then. Whenever I would see them they always looked intense and overextended, like they could use a couple of martinis to wind down a bit. Nonetheless I still enjoyed being around these heady folks. On one of their projects they would invite me in to play chess against their machine . . . it was kind of like me playing LeBron James in basketball, no contest.

Today thy’ve finally reached a level of accomplishment they've been striving for since at least the 80s. The science were nowhere near this level in 1989.

As if regular fraud is not enough, they release AI to the public.

This world is going to hell in a hand basket. Brings to mind this oldie:

I see that dead tree on the crest of the hill every week when I reach the top of Arastradero (coming from Alpine), and it always makes me think, "Angry misshapen giant".
