Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bad weld job on 04 Lemond Tourmalet?

Hi.

I bought my Lemond (new) a little over a month ago, now. About a week ago I put on a second water bottle cage, and noticed that when I did so one of the holes for the screws seemed to not want to completely tighten. I assumed that I had probably stripped the threads but I got the cage tight enough so I left it at that.

A few days later I noticed noise from the bottom bracket, so I took the cage off to eliminate that as a source of the noise. When I did so I noticed that my paint was cracked, but I also looked like the circular area where the bolt is inserted had broken loose... I couldn't be sure, but that's what it looked like.

I took the bike back to the lbs to figure out where the noise was coming from (I've quickly learned not to try to fix ANYTHING myself) and we tried a bunch of things before I said something about the bottle mount. The guy working on my bike took a close look at it and thought maybe the frame was broke.. but then looked again and changed his mind.

Anyway, it's been egging away at me, and the bike is still making noise, so last night I looked at it again, and actually tried to tighten the bolt, but it appears that the entire thing is loose and only being held in by the clearcoat. I'm going to take it back again today and see what they tell me. I'm pretty sure it's broke.

So I guess I'm wondering what to expect. The guys at the lbs have been good to me so far. I've been in enough that I was starting to wonder if I was crazy.

I know Lemond has a 1 year paint warranty and a lifetime frame defect warranty... I'm wondering if anyone knows what's going to happen if my bike is broke.

Unfortunately I don't have any pictures.

You need to call LeMond/Trek customer service and explain what happened. Then let them offer a solution.

If the frame is broke, Lemond will give you another. You will however, have to have the right person look at it to make that determination. LBS nose pickers are not always to be trusted.

It sounds like your watter bottle bolt thing (don't know the real name) is loose. It simply needs to be crimped back into place.

Frame manufacturers install those bolt things by crimping them like a rivet (in the underside). Your LBS should have a little tool tool that screws in the bolt and crimps that rivet back down. It's a small, hand-held tool that takes care of the problems in less than two minutes.

That might be true if it were a rivnut. One might assume even a LBS nose picker would pick up on a loose rivnut if that were the problem.

Lemond will warranty it no problem and no questions asked. They might even upgrade the frame you have now. The only bad part is the downtime for the new frame. It took 3 weeks total for my Zurich. With a week waiting for the Lemond rep to come and examine the frame.

I finally got around to taking pictures.

I don't know how long it's been now, but Lemond is going to replace the frame. I don't know what they're replacing it with yet, but I've been told it will be at least the equivalent frame, if not this year's model.

That's kinda too bad because I really liked the green on silver.

The rivet for the bottle cage has come loose. Needs frame repair.

That's why I like welded cage mounts...*hugs my Habanero*

NOT!!....if it's actually a rivnut,it needs rivnut repair....But it looks like there might also be a crack in the frame, and if so that's a different issue.

Lemond swapped my 99 Zurich for an 04 MJ Classic. Crack on rear stay.
Process took about 6 weeks.
