Friction shifter idea.....
If it's been done, then I'm not aware of it...
Hydraulic friction shifters.....er brifters.
Id think it'd weigh more than the traditional combination, but the modernized friction shifters might lend other benefits for the non sponsored racers?
ie: crisper & precise gear selection, endless cog quantity compatibility, even better trimming capability.
Of course there would be the common DT mounted design, but a brifter design that might draw in a lot more design support.
I'd be interested in some hydraulic brifters that supports friction shifting & disc brakes.

iirc it was 2017 since it made any fluid updates. Sometimes I think the issue with innovation is when it intersects with proprietary & profits margins. tech might be much farther along if the greediness didn't take precedence.

Perhaps it may require a superior product offered at a competitive price. Outside a very small minority participating in these forums there is essentially no demand for friction shifting whatsoever.

I have a TRP Hylex brake only system that Gevenalle offers a shifting conversion for by replacing the levers with ones that have the appropriate shift pod mounts.
I also own a Gevenalle post mount hydro system that has 2x10 mountain shifter pods installed. I'm replacing the 10 speed mountain right pod with a Nexus/Alfine 8 speed shifter pod. The pod was $85. I'm patiently awaiting a suitable project frame to present itself. (A 2x8 hybrid/IGH hydro disc road bike is the end goal.)
Neither Gevenalle or TRP (which is where they source their components from) offer any post mount option anymore. But, adaptors from Andrew Sutton Solutions would be the most likely candidates to allow the available flat mount options to be used on an IS mount bike.
So, yes you can do it. Parts are available. Finding anything in stock however, may be problematic.
