Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Mrs. GeneJockey is currently suffering from FOMO, regarding housing in Pittsburgh. I'm thinking we need to make a pilgrimage there soon, since although she lived in Pittsburgh for a year or two after college, that was over 4 decades ago, and her memories are of what it was like to live there as a young single woman.

I don't think there has ever been a time when no houses were for sale in Pittsburgh.

Not here or Syracuse area, but south of here the Mid Hudson Valley got hit hard. The rails of the main commuter railway got washed out, leaving thousands of folks who work in NYC looking for a way to get to work. West Point got 8 inches of rain in just hours, by comparison I got 2.

I keep saying, "We're in Fact Finding mode now. We're not looking for a house, we're looking at what's available in which neighborhoods so we can limit our search when it's time", but she's afraid everyone fleeing climate change will get there first.

I'm wondering how long that can go on. Texas, Florida, Arizona are all growing in population just as they're about to become less and less habitable.

EDIT: tbf, it ain't BEEN happening, but data are always a look BACK, not forward.

I was just looking at a place, with a low price, described as having "tons of potential". The pictures show a lot of clutter. I thought, "Christ! It looks like we already live there!"

Not yet. Wait till Florida's underwater.

Years ago, Mrs. GJ spent a week fantasizing about buying her Grandparent's house in Corry PA, which we could have gotten for < $200K. She had the idea that we could pay the mortgage by renting it out. "To whom?", I quietly asked, pointing out that the nearest city of any size was Erie, which "Marketplace" uses as THE example of a Rust Belt city that's lost all its manufacturing.

I let her run with it till she came to her senses. It took longer for her to get over the idea of living in Buffalo.

Avoid any place listed as having “good bones.”

It did. It disappeared and a search of the basement did not yield its location. For years after that, we were all leery of going down to the basement (where the big chest freezer was) to get anything, if we didn't have shoes on.

When Dad died, my sister began a thorough cleanout of the basement. She found it. Well, the skeletal remains, anyhow.

So by the end of the ride today the Emonda sounded like a one man band. Clicking, creaking, squeaking, ticking, tocking, clacking. All different areas.

Bars still click. I checked the attachment points everything is torqued. It is not the hoods.

Debatable if the highlighted two were ever habitable.

Pittsburg looks like a fun place to cycle IMO.

Detroit, on the other hand…….. Can we just give that city to Canada? Why anyone would move there at this time is about the same as anyone born after 2002 picking up smoking. Brain doesn’t compute.
