Addiction 2023.3

Notices
Road Cycling It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle. -- Ernest Hemingway

One would assume they know all the clearances on the interstate, at least.

Not going to Vermont this weekend.

Historic flood washes away roads in Cavendish, Vermont (wcvb.com)

Sad.

I swear every fall/winter in Portland there would be at least 15 days straight where the high was 55 and the low was 45 on the dot.

I bet the record says different.

DougRNS let's see the Portland fall/winter weather data.

Probably. But living through stuff like the second half of December 2006 is what gives one that impression. Super flat graph, not much span from low to high.

When I was a little kid in the 1970’s I became slightly interested in houseplants. I had a spider plant, a snake plant, and most exotic of all….an AIR FERN!

These air ferns allegedly needed nothing other than air to live.

I was too young and gullible to question this (I was like seven), but nostalgia made me google the whole air fern thing. Of course it’s a scam. They are not alive. They are not even a plant but a dead ANIMAL!

I go in on Tuesday. "We had to order it. It will be here tomorrow."

I go in yesterday. "I'm sorry, we tried to call you (they didn't) we don't have an Rx for you." wut

The clerk goes over to the special computer and searches a bit. Then it goes to someone on another computer.

After a few minutes she says, "We can't fill it because it was filled at your other pharmacy on July 9." wut

So I have to call the other pharmacy and again they tell me they don't have any. Not sure what was going on over there, but I finally get her to cancel out the refill so the emergency place will refill.

Wait in line again. Back to the special computer. After a bit he tells me, "OK, we'll have it in about 15 minutes."

I had a short solo ride this morning, allegedly to save my legs for tomorrow.

Good news: lots of yummy wild raspberries that are ripe and made for a fine occasional roadside snack.
Bad news: I had a scare encounter with a big trash truck. At the time I was sure the near-crash was the truck's fault. But it was probably my fault, at least in part.

I was riding on a medium-busy residential street. There was a garbage truck in front of me, lights all flashing. It went around a few bends at around 15-20MPH and I stayed back. There were a couple of cars behind us also. The truck came up to a straight-away and pulled right and slowed down/stopped. I figured it was stopping for a pick-up. There was about 2 feet of clearance in my lane, and good sights to the oncoming lane, with no oncoming traffic, so I slowly started to go around the garbage truck. As I was passing it turned HARD LEFT (starting a K turn/U turn, presumably) and I saw the truck coming onto me. I turned HARD left to avoid the truck (no oncoming traffic) and yelled really loud, he slowed down and I was able to avoid getting hit by a foot or so, but I was very scared. He yelled an F bomb at me, I yelled back that he should have signaled, and rode away quite shaken.

In retrospect, since all his lights were already flashing I don't know how he can signal a sudden left. It would have been nice if he stuck his arm out and/or took a look, but I am suspecting that if we are playing the blame game there is plenty to go around.

Life lesson: unless you are positive the stopped garbage truck is making a pickup, stay back and/or be prepared for a left hook.

That's easy peasy compared to the trials and tribulations I hear from my patients trying to get Adderall and Adderall XR, which has been in short supply all year.

Air Fern was the answer to a question on "Quiz Planet" recently. Mrs and I both missed it.
