Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I can't decide what to do.

I just got a warranty replacement for my 12-yr-old Trek OCLV frameset - new frame & fork. The original one was never a perfect fit, but I got used to it. At first I thought I wanted to sell it and use the money to buy a Hab Team Ti, but now I can't decide.

Reasons to sell it:
1) Fit.
2) Not crazy about the color (I wanted nude or matte black and I got gloss black instead).
3) My Chris King headset and EMS fork would fit the 1" steerer on the Hab.
4) A new Chris King for the new bike is $$$$$
5) Wouldn't mind trying something new.

Reasons to keep it:
1) It's sitting on my living room floor, staring at me.
2) The PITA of selling/shipping it.
3) After locating a geometry chart for my original bike and comparing it to the new one, it appears that the new one will not be as bad of a fit as the old one was.
4) The new bike is OCLV 120, which will be lighter (and possible stiffer) than my old one.
5) My old EMS fork has over 30,000 miles on it, and the plastic lamination is starting to peel. The new frame has a nice fork.
6) Even though I don't like the color, it's cool in that it only says "Trek" in one place (downtube) so it isn't a billboard.
7) It would still be under the awesome Trek warranty.

UGH! I dunno what to do.

Determine what price it would take to sell it and buy the Hab, and put it on eBay to see if there are any bites (could also take a look to see what similar frame/forks have gone for on eBay).

If you can't get that amount, keep it. If you can, sell it. It doesn't cost that much to list it, and if you end up keeping it, you'll not have to keep wondering if you could sold it. The trick is obviously determing the price you need to get.

One just went for $910 with the ugly stock billboard paintjob. The Hab is $895 (price went up about a week ago - figures).

Good idea. I suppose I could set a $900 reserve or something, and see what happens.

Thanks.

They're all nice, but they all have the same geometry, so that wouldn't address the fit issue.

Jessica thinks I should keep it. Hmmm...

Is the Hab the bike of your dreams? If not, I say keep the Trek.

With the Trek, you got an upgrade on what you already had. If you decide to dump it in a few years, no biggie b/c the old one was 12yrs out anyway.

With the Hab, you'd be getting a frame that would be difficult to rationalize dumping b/c it's new and Ti. I almost bought an Agilis this summer, but couldn't quite make the life time commitment (stupid I know, but think what my wife must put up with).

The Trek frame looks nice even if it's not your first choice.

Yeah, I updated that old thread, but it sank fast. Basically:

- They don't do NOS
- They don't refurb
- They don't use OCLV 150 anymore

The rep said that my frame is an OCLV 120, and is sold as the 5000 and also used for warranty purposes. They're painted to order, otherwise you get the stock scheme if you don't specify a color.

lol... I was actually considering building my spare bike into a SS, but I think I'm too much of a wuss for that.

If you sell it now you'll always wonder what it rode like. Go ahead and build it up and try it out. Then decide whether to sell.

Do you want to keep the frame because it is what you want or it's just convenient. It seems to me that geometry isn't exactly what you want and a major reason you want the frame is so you don't have to deal with selling it. I wouldn't keep it if this is the reason.

I think I'm going to keep it. Perf has a Chris King headset in stock (in black) and this weekend is double team Perf points.... DOH! I'm going away this weekend. :|

Not to fear! I just found a 20% off Perf coupon.

I was probably unwrapping it as you were typing this

It's actually pretty sweet looking. I hit it with a bit of Meguiar's Quick Detailer to get the glue residue off.

Damn, that's a hot Trek! Great that they don't have stickers all over the place, and that black looks stealth. I love Ti, I've got a Ti, but if I had that frame theres no way I wouldn't build that up and ride it.

Stupid Perf!!! They insist on hosting ALL THREE of their sites (Perf, Nash, Supergo) on the same damn box and the thing is slow as molasses and keeps timing out.

I wanna order a King headset and a black seat collar, feh!
