Addiction 2023.4

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Today, we're gonna walk around the neighborhoods, maybe check out an open house a block from the old Hamilton Watch factory, which is now Clock Tower condominiums,

I have to work today preparing undisclosed work product. I want to be done in 4 hours. I want world peace too. At best I'll get 1 of those things. Starting with the family business I've been working for 50 years. I enjoy my work now but it's still work. It's the people I don't like. Poor work ethic which leads to mistakes, incomplete tasks and complaining. These are the same people who come in late, take long lunches, walk around the office chatting up a storm and leave right at 5.

I think there was a nesting pair near my house several years ago. I used to see them fly over pretty often.

One afternoon, I can home from work and found part of my back deck covered with pigeon feathers below the roof. Looked like a pigeon had flown into a fan. I think a hawk had caught one and had fed on the edge of the roof justr like that one is doing on the pole..

I think I mentioned that I saw one catch a HUGE rat last year while I was sitting outside eating lunch. The rat was so big, the bird had trouble gaining altitude and had to stop for a bit on a light pole. I will try to find the photo.

Well, it rained, pretty good for a little while, just drizzle ATM. It's like a typical Portland day in Flag now.

In shipping news, Subarus are streaming into Vancouver!

I was riding in the hills when a Red Tail flew over me carrying a snake. At least I think it was a Red Tail and the snake looked to be 3 feet long.

In the mountains north of here I rode around a corner and startled a hawk with a squirrel on the ground and the hawk flew up to a safe distance. The squirrel looked like it was cut with a sharp knife. After I passed by the bird came back down to retrieve his snack.

Saw a falcon eating a pigeon near my job when I was road testing a car.

I worked at a county jail facility for less than a year. There is a garage there which serviced county vehicles which is what I did. There are 5 separate jail units including a "supermax". It's 2600 acres and has something like 7000 prisoners. One of the most boring jobs I ever had.

That’s a pretty big rat, you sure it wasn’t a politician?

Rained pretty hard here early this morning but has stopped. Club rides were cancelled with both clubs. Might go cruise the mtb after I fix yet another flat.

This tweet seems oddly off-topic for the sender. Are the Portland Pickles an actual baseball team?

Not sure they'd started by the time I left town and I never looked into them, kinda figured they were something along the lines of the Savannah Bananas.

Portland's minor league baseball action wound up out in the suburbs before I left the area with the founding of the Hillsboro Hops, single-A squad for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

I got invited to join a “gravel” ride with some friends.

I took my CX bike. Reminder I am a roadie with very few off-road skills.

The gravel part of the route was fine. The paved part, obv, was no problem.

The somewhat technical single track with wet leaves and wet roots and huge rocks scared the crap out of me. I had to dismount and walk several times. About 3/4 into the ride, it became very hilly with loose gravel bordering on MTB type terrain, so I turned back and wished my friends good luck.

I think I need to either stick to the road, or attend some off-road skills clinics.

One of the guys fell several times, and I believe everyone fell at least once.
