Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Olives are messy, but not particularly hazardous. Pine cones are worse.

I just swept all the olives off of Mom's driveway

Dark and simplistic. Does nothing for me. I'd never willingly listen to it again.

Does someone pick the olives?

Where do you find how many Stravas have been on a road?

Related, but distinct.

I haven't seen anyone picking olives along this road. If people do pick any, they sure leave a bunch to fall.

You can find Strava segment counts in the "Segment Explore" section:

There are folks making artisanal olive oil out here, and 95% of all the olive harvested in America are Californian.

But municipalities plant olive trees which are pretty and also drought resistant. And then the olives fall, which is somewhat less decorative.

When we moved from The City down to the Peninsula, the first place we lived was in Foster City. The neighborhood had a lot of olive trees. When The Younger Boy was born, Mom and Dad, who'd recently retired, came out for an extended visit. Dad walked around the neighborhood and was intrigued by the olive trees, which were heavy with ripe olives just then. We found a book on olives, and Dad memorized the "how to cure olives" bit, and the next day he set out with a bucket looking for the biggest, fattest ones.

Half of then, he slit and brined, a la Kalamata olives. The rest he laid out on trays and covered with kosher salt. Every day he'd roll them around, adding more salt.as they shriveled up. Once completely cured, you have to soak them or boil the to rehydrate a little, then you can mix them with oil and herbs and spices - those are your basic "Oil Cured Olives". They were pretty good.

LOL

What about Flag Day?
I celebrate no official US holidays. Only GHD. I even gave up Festivus celebrations.

Last night I turned pedals for the first time since the 12th. Since I'm the primary cook, I didn't have the option of a ride on the road, so I rode on Zwift instead. Mostly Z1/Z2, but I did push the "Titans Grove Reverse KOM" segment a bit - 2:40 seconds of 300w, out of the saddle, just for grins and to see how it felt, which was pretty good.

Today, I'm going to take the Litespeed over to Canada Rd for maybe 25 or so miles. That should be fun!

Wish I had some flat area for my zone 2 rides. The constant change of elevation when trying to maintain a specific power is annoying.

Just hung up the christmas lights. For once I wasn’t rushing to get it done, and it was almost enjoyable. Took most of the day, which is mind boggling since we really don’t have much.

Simon started saying “This” today. Also figured out how to drive a remote controlled car, even if it was just going forward and reverse into walls.

There is a beautiful female German Shepherd loose in my neighborhood. She has no collar and she is very friendly and looks healthy. She's been here for a couple days and I don't know what to do. We posted a picture on a lost pet page and a local neighborhood watch thing. Afraid to call animal control but maybe we should.

While talking to a neighbor about the dog she told me the people who moved out a few weeks back abandoned their two cats. One day last week one of the younger women who lived there came by and threw a handful of french fries to one of the cats. After she left I took some cat food over there and the poor cat scarfed it up. I haven't seen that cat since but their other one was in my yard today hiding from the German shepherd.
