Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Getting pulled into some meetings for implementing an ERP (enterprise resource planning) software suite for my department. It's a discrete manufacturing complete one-stop-shop that takes care of raw and intermediate inventory, finished goods, batch sizes, orders, blah blah blah. Had one at my first gig out of college at a huge biotech place and it made sense there - formulations, manufacturing.

Thing is, we have a ton of SKUs and many of them are still in development. We are essentially an R&D chemistry company that is selling some products. Some are ironed out, some are not. So what's the net effect? We are having to make shortcuts, exceptions, and other band-aids that are basically decreasing the functionality and financial visibility that the ERP offers.

This feels like something that someone high in the sky in some Operations role thought would be a great idea, and sold it to the board by saying it would decrease COGS by X% and increase margins to the private equity group by Y%. It's a hugely costly effort and it will be interesting seeing if this ever pays off. Maybe it will as a conglomerate (the other sites/subsidiaries are going in as well), but here I can't see this paying off. I could be actually improving our bottom line methods with the time I'm spending on this crap.

As we were walking in the parking lot I saw a solitary cyclist in full kit cresting the summit of the climb. I clapped loudly and yelled “Allez Allez” tifoso style, he smiled and said thanks.

$5 bleacher tix are available for Reds v Diamondbacks tonight, if you get a rental and leave now you should be able to catch a couple innings

I'm not going tonight, got a little overheated today so need to chill instead of driving downtown.

Hopefully cheap tix happen this weekend when the Tigers are in town!

One of my lab techs didn't finish his routine PM on one of our critical instruments - an ICP mass spectrometer. So, I get to go in the lab and get my hands dirty . Good, bc if I thought about ERPs for another minute I was literally going to

No thanks. It will be an adventure enough to get to Anaheim. We will take a public bus to downtown LA then a commuter train to Anaheim. For the return there is no commuter rail (they only run during commuter hours) so we will take an Amtrak train to Union Station in LA and then a bus back to our place.

We could consider an Uber but the cost would be easily twice as high and mrs datlas is thriftier than I am.

Dougs don't talk about our national past time like that. Shame.

I expect she will be ok but it’s gonna take a long time. I am guessing she won’t get charges dropped/addressed for 1-2 months and then she will be considered an official graduate with a degree. But I think she is so burned by what happened it will take a long time for her to feel all better. I keep trying to remind her that her beef is not really with her school, the School of Cinematic Arts, but rather with the higher ups in the administration of USC. She is too sad and angry and hurt to see/appreciate the difference.

Microsoft d365. At my first gig we had Oracle and everything worked so well, but it was also a manufacturing environment. We're too R&D for this to make sense.

I will try to redeem myself by rooting for the Pirates and not dwelling on the fact that the Phillies are doing so well.

Joined the Tuesday morning Fiesta Island ride today, best ride in San Diego IMO. Quality riders just riding real hard. It's a paceline ride that is punctuated by 30s - 2 min ebike attacks from a local coach. The tough guys hold pace or even attack eachother between the ebike accelerations. Awesome ride.

Average speed 28.2 mph? Seems like you'd be dropping the e-bike above that? Or the e-pilot is strong enough to pedal after the limiter?
Of course, I do know a guy who by-passed the limiter and got power up over 40 mph.

Sunday I went to the bike path for a couple hours of car-free spinning. There was a Mad Max looking guy on a huge e-scooter. The thing seemed to be about 6 feet long and had a metal body like 10+ inches tall. He stood straight up and was wearing a full-face helmet, leather jacket with shoulder pads, and leather looking pants with more pads. He hit the throttle when he went by me and was up to at least 25 mph in seconds.

It seemed weird and out of place.

I think it's a throttle e-bike. Not quite sure how they work TBH. When he attacks us, its 30-35 MPH

Whew, OT tonight at KCB. Last rehearsal before showtime and a few of the songs had issues. Alas American Salute is amongst them and it's the song I like the best. We gave it short shrift in the practices while spending hours on the silly flute concerto. Sad.
