Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

HELP, shoe/cleat problem?!

I just got a new set of pedals but when I tried to install the cleats on my shoes, Specialized Sonomas that are supposed to be, Smooth, walkable rubber sole with a recessed SPD/Time cleat pod according to Specialized, there are a couple of problems. 1, the bolts are too short to reach the shoe, 2, the plate and the cleats are seperated, have a space between them. It looks like even if the bolts were long enough the bar that connects the cleats would be strained if tightened to the shoe. Is it possible to get something to fill the space between them? I am sure finding a longer bolt won't be a problem. Here are the shoes but I don't have a pics of the pieces. The pedals are the Forte Pro's btw. Thanks for any help!

Don't have a dealer here, had to order them online. I can't believe as many "opinions" as there are on BF that nobody has a clue or the time to help...

Are you talking about perhaps needing larger plastic shims between the cleat and the shoe? As far as the cleat not fitting the shoe- well I have nothing good to offer as a suggestion there.

You may have to trim some of the rubber away.

The bolt is an M5 screw, most probably 12mm in length. I recently had a very simular problem with the included screws being too short. I went to the local Home Depot and was able to get a 16mm screw with a philips head that worked perfectly. As far as shims under the cleat - can't really help there.

Thanks! Talked to Performance and they said since my shoes are recessed I don't need to use the cleat guide that is included with road pedals. If that doesn't work send them back and get something new...

I don't understand what you mean by the 'plate'. Can you post some pics of what you're trying to do, and why it's not working?

Longer bolts should be easy to get at the local hardware store, or worst case www.loosescrews.com (these guys might even sell an adaptor shim, if that's what you end up needing).

*edit* cool... sounds like you sorted it out.
