Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bike Computer

Hey Guys,

I am looking for the best computer for my road bike. I am looking for one that includes cadence. Also, do the make them with HRM's? Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks,
Jake

I don't own this product but I've been looking at the Cateye CC-CD300DW. It has wireless cadence and they also make a version with a HRM. Maybe someone else who has one can chime in.

I love my Cateye. Mine doesn't have Cadence (next one I buy will!) or the HRM, but as kster mentioned fairly certain they do have a model with both.

I have the CD300DW and I do like it. The only complaint I have is that the cadence pickup seems very particular about where the magnet on the crank arm is. If your foot moves it at all.....even just a tad....furget about it until you are able to push the magnet back in place. The instructions are a bit intimidating at first but not to bad once you use it a few times.

Gary, if you dont mind me asking, how much was your CD300DW? Do you think it was worth the price?

Thanks,
Jake

It's wired, but reliable. No false readings. You can recall your average and high cadence when you get done with your ride, and it's about $30. REI carries it.

Jake.....It was around $125.00 or so. I was using the mity8 wired computer before the cd300 and in my opinion the cadence feature is not worth a whole lot more money to me than a standard computer. I would have been smarter to take the money and buy something else but hey, its fun to splurge sometimes.

P.S. The wireless aspect is worth its money in gold. Just so much cleaner.

Also be sure to check out the Polar models. The s150, s520, s720 and s725 include bike and HR functions and are watches (they do have options to mount on the bike though). The CS100 and CS200 are more similar to standard bike computers and offer both bike and HR functions as well. Price range from about $80-$300 for the models I listed. I have the s520 and love it, as it lets me download my ride info after my rides and gives me plenty of data to work with....

I've got the Shimano FlightDeck 6502 computer. Has been very reliable for past year.

I bought Dbase db500 HRM last year. Has also served me well.

Only feature I wish the Shimano had was that it stored an average cadence per leg/per ride feature since I tend to concentrate on cadence more than anything. It only display's current cadence.

Bikes: Cannondale caad9 full duraace`, trek soho singlespeed...cross bike coming soon.

i just bought an astrale 8 today, i had heard really good things about them, and i wanted something wired. the wire was wayy too long for my bike, so i just like goofily wrapped it twice around my bars and it shortend it up perfectly. it seems to read good and i like it alot. id recommend any of the Cateye products.

I too have the Cateye CD300DW, and am very pleased with the performance. I like having the front end of my bicycle clean (nothing on the fork). I haven't had any issues with poor pick up by the receiver, works very well. I paid $89 plus shipping though E-bay (brand new).
I didn't look real close in a catalog I got recently but I beleive Polar now has a computer with speed, cadence, and heart rate. Like I said, I didn't look closely so I don't know the model number or anything.

Just so you know, if you want HR and Cadence on the same computer, the choices go down and the prices go up significantly. Cateye has a model that does HR, and they have several models that do cadence. However I don't think they presently have one that will do both. They are coming out with a new one that will, but expect it to be close to the $300 price range. Polar and a few others have some that will do both.

I have an Astrale 8 that I just installed today. It's a very cheap way to get cadence. It is not wireless, but you can get a very clean installation if you do it right. I used clear packing tape to attach the wires to the frame. You have to look very closely to find any evidence of the wires. My previous cyclocomputer was wireless. I really don't prefer one over the other. Wireless is nice, but you can have installation problems, the transmitter is larger than a wired sensor, and occassionally you get interference.

I already have a Polar HR monitor. I wear it on my wrist, but I could get a mount to put it on the handlebar. I primarily just use the audio alarms to tell me when I'm out of the zone and I only have to glance at it occassionally.

I paid about $75 for my Polar A3 HR monitor, and I paid about $25 for my Astrale 8. So for less than $100 I got a cyclocomputer with cadence and a solid HR monitor.

I wasn't sure about that one. I've looked at it before on their web site and cadence is not listed as one of the features, but I did think it was odd that a cyclocomputer at that price would not have cadence.

I removed my post because I'm pretty sure that I was wrong!

It's the Forerunner 301... has HRM, but doesn't have cadence.

I can vouch for both the Cateye CD300DW and the Astrale 8. Both have nearly identical functions, including cadence, except one (CD300DW) is wireless. Both are great.

I have the Cat Eye CD3000Dw also, its a great computer, a little on the large side, but with such a big display you get to virtually see all the data you need with one glance and no buttons to push. Agree about the magnet on the crack its a bit tough to get just right, you really need some strong doublesided tape so it wont move.

good luck

I have a CD300DW that I am willing to sell if anyone wants it. The unit was used once on my Allez Elite. It was a little too bulky for my taste. Iwill sell it for 70.00 shipped if anyone wants it (in the US of course).

Thanks,

If you want cadence and reliability get a Cateye Astrale. It's wired and does not have HRM, I use a polar on the wrist for that.

We should put up a Pinned Computer thread ...

Cateye Astrale 8 is THE computer when it comes to simple, reliable, good looking ... WITH cadence. The only downside for *some* may be that it is wired and not wireless. I really like the Astrale.

Perhaps the only downside is the Astrale doesn't display a lot of information at once. You have to go through the buttons if you want to see more than two pieces of information. This might be a blessing in disguise because you're not distracted by some of the other stuff. I just got mine and the jury is still out. I'm just used to seeing more information displayed at the same time.

Just removed my Astrale 8, and installed a Polar S725, which is a great unit... I searched all over and this one seemed like the best overall unit with speed, cadence, altitude, and HRM. I've only used it once but so far so good. THere is so much to learn about this unit that it is going to take me awhile.

I use a Performance Axiom A08C. It's wired, it's cheap ~20-25$ and it has cadence. I have a separate Polar HRM that just does HRM (doesn't even have a watch function)

Jake,

I use to love Vetta's (5+ years ago) but now the mounts are cheap and in my experience barely last a year before they start shorting out. I'm also not a fan of wireless, just old fashion I guess. I've swtiched to Cateye's for all my bikes, and when the last Vetta and Trek (the oldest one I have and still works great) stop working, I'll get a couple more Cateye's. I just use the basic computers, so can't comment on other features, but they are well built, easy to see and read, and work great.

John

I have a Trek. Works well for cadence and speed.
