Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I purchased a Giant OCR-2 yesterday after test riding it and falling in love with it. According to Giant's sizing chart, I'm a large in two categories, and an extra large in another. I road both, and being in the drops on the XL made me feel like I was going to face plant. The LBS wasn't trying to push any bikes on me, and they had nothing negative to say of the fit.

Not sure if its possible to judge "fit" from photos online, but here goes:

Bad picture #1. Please refer to picture in later post.

Pedals vertical

Bad picture #2. Please refer to picture in later post.

Pedals horizontal

Opinions? Please, no requests for dates.

First cut.... You need to position the pedals on the balls of your feet... That will give more info on the fore-aft I think if you adjust for that, you will increase your seat height a bit and then you might get into a slightly less upright postion.. I think you look a bit upright in the current position... Before you go out, remove the black disk on the wheel, next to the biggest rear ring.. Also if you are not goign to do much night riding, remove the reflectors..

Oh you are going to hear "flip it(stem)"... dont do it at once.. dial your position in gradually.

I agree, change your foot position and raise the seat a bit. Your legs look too bent, and you are very upright.

Looks decent. Only observation is to maybe move the saddle back slightly to align the bony part of your knee with the pedal spindle (in the horizontal position). But, you're close enough that it would be a preference type of thing. How tall are you?

Hard to tell when you are just seatting there doing nothing. I think position usually changes somewhat when the rider is on the road and warmed up.
I'll wait untill you get the shoes and the pedals before doing any kind of fitting.

Okay, nothing has changed in this picture. My rear is a bit further back on the saddle where it should be, and I'm clipped in.

I guess all those years of slouching turned me into a hunchback. Nothing I can do about that now, I suppose. lol

Anywho, I'm 6'4", so I'm a tad concerned about my frame being too small. I like the way it feels, but coming from a hybrid I'm not totally sure how a road bike is supposed to feel.

Try to flatten your back just a smidgeon of you can, without being uncomfortable. Everyone is differant when it comes a nice flat racing back posture, so it's up to you. I always try to stay nice and flat. I find I breathe a little better on the long rides when I do.

Everything else looks pretty good. Good leg extension, etc.

That looks much better. On the first images the frame was looking too small for you.

Honestly the frame still looks a little small... I am suprised you did not go with the Xlarge... not bad though... if you fliped the stem you would be in a very good posistion... IMO of course.

Dammit, I was afraid of that!! The smaller frame felt better when I road both, but I don't want to be kicking myself when I know more about road riding. What does everyone else think about the frame size?

I was also going to comment that you looked cramped over the frame to me. If you purchased the bike yesterday I am sure the LBS would let you change for an XL, especially at 6' 4".

Yeah, the top tube is small for your torso since your reach, with elbows bent, could be stretched further. In fact, your knees look like they'd hit your elbows if you were riding (gripped closer together) on the top bar.

[edit: Yep, your elbows would have too much bend when on the tops. This would limit your hand positions to the drops and the hoods only... not good.]

I actually just purchased an OCR Composite Limited, same frame, almost same components. I am also 6'4" on the dot. My LBS fitted me to an XL size. I've put 150 miles on my bike, and the XL size feels spot on. I'm somewhat surprised you didn't go with an XL, but I think you'll get the L to fit you. I highly recommend a pro fitting session with an LBS.

Enjoy the bike, it's a beauty!!!

As you're my height and proportions look similar, you'd want a frame with 'about' a 600mm top tube. I ride a 605 and aren't that flexible, plus I have a 71.5 degree seat angle and long stays which centres my CG quite well.

The Large Giant has a 58.5 TT which at your height - especially with a 73 degree seat angle - is probably a little too small in theory. The XL has a 61cm TT, which would work with a 110mm stem and a layback post.

Neither sizes are optimal for your height, I'm afraid to say. To make what you've got fit, you're going to need a 130mm stem with rise, and a layback post from what I can see.

I'm 6'4" as well, and I have no idea how you fit on a large frame instead of an XL. Unless our leg length is just that much different or something. I thought I was going to knee myself in the nose on a large OCR2. Really really fine bike though! I would see if you can swap.

What is a layback post? Also, should I be trying to make this bike fit, an XL fit, or look for a different ride?

BTW, here are my measurements in CM:

Inseam: 89
Trunk: 70
Forearm: 41
Arm: 81.5
Thigh: 66
Lower Leg: 61
Sternal Notch: 160

Did your lbs check your fit the first time, or was it your gut checking your fit? You're sitting on a lot of $$$. If I was you I'd go back and make sure you don't need the XL, you do look a little cramped.

BTW, can you see the front hub in that position?

The front hub is visible, but its behind the bars. If I lower myself a little more, its not visible.

According to their sizing page , my inseam would put me on a 60cm conventional bicycle. That's squarely a large. But, according to the "height" gauge, I'm an inch into the extra-large zone. I got a fitting at the LBS, and everything looked fine to them.

When I get out and ride it again tomorrow, what are some signs of the frame being too small for me? I really like the bike, but I don't want to be locked into something that isn't right for me....

That bike IS too small. If you don't get one that fits, you will regret it later.

Hooray, a fellow OCR rider! What's your inseam, my fine sir?

My LBS has a 3-day return policy. Please keep the opinions coming!

Your position is more aerodynamic than most of the guys who post on this site, you were able to obtain it without thinking about it, and it you felt more comfotable than you did on the bigger frame. So even if you kept the bike, I honestly think you would be fine.

Now, you are thin enough to get the bars lower, and get more aero, but you need flexability in order to do this as well. I wouldn't worry about it just yet, just start riding the bike, all the time.

You are going to feel stretched out on anything with a more aggressive position than your previous hybrid, so that will take some time getting used to as well.

Maybe ride the bike for a while, and then try a longer stem??

Do us a favor and take a shot with your palm ons on the tops of the levers, (four fingers facing forward, and lean forward so your forearms are resting along the tops of the bars, also.. one with your hands in the drops.
