Weight on the bike

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weight on the bike

Alright, so I bought a bike bag to attach on the seat post. Before this, I put all my stuff in my backpack and just rode.

Now that I have all my stuff on the bike, it seems that it's harder to ride. The total weight didn't change, but riding the bike is harder now.

Has anyone else experienced this before?

What you have here is the old sprung vs. unsprung weight issue. It's good to get it off your back—makes you lighter and less sweaty, but it adds weight to the bike, and that weight bangs in and out of every pothole, crack and crater along your way. I use panniers exclusively, but hitting the ridges with a heavy load sucks, no question.

Ever since McDonald's opened , people are getting heavier and the Earth's mass is increasing, hence, more gravity.

It's in your head. Shave your legs to compensate.

The only way I can see that it would slow you down is if your new seat bag is pushing on your rear brake cable and making your brake drag.

He would have to be carrying more than 30 pounds of stuff for this to happen, huh?

One reason that mountain bikers like Camelbak packs is that putting the weight on your back makes the bike easier to maneuver in technical situations. On the road, most people prefer putting the weight on the bike so you don't strain your back as much and technical control issues are much rarer.

If he had a seat bag that could hold 600 cc, he could carry 30 pounds of iridium in it.
