Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Most walkable pedal/cleat combination

I'm on Speedplays right now, which are only marginally walkable with the plastic covers. Would like to know what the walkable options are (including any not too clunky mountain shoe/cleat combos).

Is the old SPD system the best thing out there?

Lake mtn bike shoes and SPD cleats:

https://www.nashbar.com/profile.cfm?c...eid=&pagename=

I've cycled thousands of miles in them (like roughly 20,000 miles so far), and have done several hikes of several miles over varied terrain ... and they are still my most comfortable shoes.

I've even worn them while touring castles in Europe ... while wearing a skirt!

The Time RX-series with the Cafe' cleats beats 'em all IMO. If you haven't tried them, you should.

SPD's and the Shimano SPD sandal. C'mon Sponge, when have you ever seen me WITHOUT those sandals on?

Hmm...are we talking about beach-cruising, or haulin' ass on a road bike with occasional stops to carb up?

Well, trying to bridge the gap - something stiff enough for decent rides, but walkable enough to get off the bike and chase the kids when they start hacking around. Might go with one pedal system with two pairs of shoes - one for hammering and one for parenting.

I went from a full mountain shoe to this for my mountain/road/family rides. I really like them, they feel good, Nashbar has them on sale from time to time for $70, and use standard SPD's.

Try the Specialized Sonoma's. I have a pair, and they serve the purpose that you're talking about.

Cannondale Roam shoes from Performance + regular SPDs do the job for my commute. They appear to be quite similar to what Machka posted. They sure beat my carbon-soled, Look-cleated Specialized road shoes for walking.

I purchased an inexpensive pair of Shimano lace-up mountain bike/touring shoes that I use with Crank Bros. Candy pedals on the tandem. This settup works very well as tandem riding usually involves more stopping and wondering around...

I use these shoes, but with the spd comp. pedals. I have the same pedals on all three bikes, along with the same cleats on all of my different shoes. The shoes are super stiff, yet comfortable for walking. Heck, I forget I have them on all the time. I got home from my commute last night and realized I had mowed the lawn while wearing them. I'll never go back to the sliding around on ice LOOK cleats ever again.

Ditto. I have these also. I found some on ebay and saved about $30 from the MSRP. Also Performance has a shoe that looks like this one for even cheaper. Good Luck!

Don't know if they are the best, but on my old spds I once went mountian biking on what was hwy 39 where it was washed out and had to carry the bike on a section of goat trail only 4 or 5 inches wide and with lots of loose stuff. Had no trouble. If they will work for that they should have no trouble on anything you will find near a road.
