32 spoke hub on 16 spoke rim

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

32 spoke hub on 16 spoke rim

So I have a 16 spoke rim and a 32 spoke hub and I was wondering if I could build it up. The problem the wheelbuilder mentioned was that the lack of metal between the spokes might cause the stresses to localize more and perhaps even tear the metal. Can I build the wheel like this, will it work just as well? Has anyone done this? It strikes me that this wouldn't be that much additional stress on the hub and it should be able to handle it ok, but I don't really know.

hub is 6500 ultegra
rim is old shamal

Unless you are emotionally (or financially, I know the feeling) attatched to the hub, I'd just get a new one. But, what do I know...

i've done it with a 26" tubular, laced radial, at 170 pounds and not killed myself. that said, most people will probably tell you it's a bad idea.

If you lace it 2x you should be fine. Radial lacing stresses hubs more because there's very little metal between the hole and the outer edge of the flange. Crossing the spokes puts the load laterally across the flange instead of directly outwards.

This is a good idea and will help some. Still, the problem you will possibly encounter is just what you mentioned earlier--lack of support through the hub flange. Like another poster said, unless you are really attached to that hub, it would be best to get a new one.

Can someone recommend a new 16 hole hub then? I see a number of prebuilt wheels have them but few are available individually. I seen a ritchey wcs and american classic, which may in fact be the same with different decals. What about something along the lines of the shimano hub on the wh-550, what is left in the rim to hold the spoke there if the nipples are at the hub?
