Pepper Spray / Mase
 

I currently carry dog repellant on my rides, but now I'm considering pepper spray or mase in the event that I have an unavoidable confrontation with the two-legged variety of dog.

Does anyone have a recommendation in terms of brands or types? ThanX!!

I don't buy these stuffs, but I would also like to know what brands I can buy, I don't think there are much of these pepper sprays from Singapore.


Also, from your previous thread "inch from death", guess it would be good to spray them on the cars or throw at the cars if they wanna try anything funny.

I was also thinking of carrying this sort of thing. How do you carry it while riding? Put it in your pocket? Strap it around your wrist? I just can't think of a convenient way to carry it, but also have it handy should you need it. :D

Check out your local sporting goods store and look for 'bear scare', i.e. pepper spray. They come in varying sizes and you can get nylon holsters for the cans which can be strapped/taped to the top tube for easy access.

One consideration though, if you ever have to use the stuff, is to be aware of the wind direction before deploying the trigger. It would not only incapicitate you should it blow back in your face, but would surely enrage your attacker to possibly do something more to you in your defenseless state. A slight breeze is all it would take to blow the spray off target. Having said that, you would hope just pointing a can of that stuff at somebody would be sufficient reason for them to back off and leave you alone.

I carry my dog repellant (which comes with a clip) clipped to the strap on my camelbak. It's always within a split-second from my grasp that way.

Yup - I get the feeling that I'm going to run into that character again, and in a worst case scenario, I want a non-lethal way to defend myself. :)

I'm yet to find pepper spray, dog-repellent, sub-machine guns or anything else necessary. Most people don't realise that:

1. If you stop, the dog will usually lose interest in the chase anyway, and

2. Most of the dogs I have encountered have been friendly. Those that weren't were intimidated by me picking up my bike as though it was a weapon.

After living in Northern Ontario all my life I have seen many methods used to scare bears away and I suppose that some of them will work with dogs as well. The one that is very popular these days is called a Bear-Banger and it is like a little gun, in the shape of a pen or very small flashlight, that you carry with a charge in it which lets off a huge bang when fired. There is no discharge from the gun itself just the noise. There is an add on feature which releases some type of flare which goes out about 30 feet and creates a very large flash of light which is quite exciting. Some people are using them for fireworks displays at the cottage. They seem to be very effective and I suppose you could likely use it on idiot motorists as well!;)

I am not a fan of pepper spray on dogs.

I am a fast rider and I can ride away from nearly any dog. And if I can't, I just reach down for my water bottle and spray water at them. Every dog I have seen, freaks out when it sees the blast of water and pulls up which gives me my chance to make good my escape.

Pepper spray would just be harder to reach and then point and then actually hit and because of its nastiness, I might get myself. I don't care if I get a little water on me.

I have tested option 2 for dogs, and that is stopping, dismounting and walking out of their territory. That has worked 100% of the time for me. Just keep the bike between you and the dog.

I don't think pepper spray would work well on motorists. Most here in Central FL have AC so that won't work. Most are passing you too fast to really be a viable target. And if they did see you pointing pepper spray at them, it would be an open invite to road rage which does not even bear thinking about. I have yet to meet a really toxic driver, but I think one of those would best be handled by just getting off the road. Motorists have short attention spans and will probably leave pretty quickly.
